4.0 out of 5 stars NLT is a blast to read for hiding the Word in your heart
The New Living Translation is not a word for word translation, but, no one ever suggested such a thing. Yet, I find the Bible to be so much fun to read with this translation. The New Living Translation is not a word for word translation, but, no one ever suggested such a thing. Yet, I find the Bible to be so much fun to read with this translation. I especially find Old Testament stories coming to life as I read. Probably because the stories were meant to be told dynamically before they were ever written down. Now, I cannot use this translation for word studies and I refer to a literal translation for exhortations from the Bible. But I find that I remember the stories much more. I can grasp the scene much better. The stories become hidden in my heart. And then, much later, even when I'm not reading and least expecting it, God gives me the truth and understanding behind the story. I suggest this translation if you want to simply ENJOY God's Word. Seek God and He'll find you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contrary to what some say: this is the WORD OF GOD!, January 25, 2001
By
This review is from: New Living Translation : Holy Bible: Self-Help Edition (Paperback)
I strongly disagree with the person who said that they didn't agree that this translation is the Word of God. I have been searching for a Bible that is easy to read and understand for some time now and The New Living Translation is only one that has captured my attention and let me truly be able to understand God's word. This Bible is for anyone who wants to walk closer to God and be able to understand His message to us. This Bible is, BY ALL MEANS, the Word of God put into terms we can all understand and benefit from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rediscoverd NLT, June 1, 2008
This review is from: New Living Translation : Holy Bible: Self-Help Edition (Paperback)
My desire is to know how best to study the word of God in it's most accurate form, as true as possible to the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. I love the KJV, it is poetic, and majestic. Some verses just don't sound right out loud if it isn't in the KJV. It occassionaly makes it difficult to catch subtle points because of the differences in the english language and word usage over time however. NLT for me was for enjoyment and "straight through" reading.
For a couple of years, the NASB, after lots of study, has been my bible of choice for being the "truest" to the originals for serious word/concept study. Not that I would disagree with anyone elses idea of the "best" translation in terms of accuracy. The ESV a good medium between readability and word for word translation. Accidently, as I was reading First Samual and had some problems with a passage in the NASB, grabbed the NLT (thought it was the ESV), and Behold! The NLT shed some light on more than a few passages. After reading the NLT version, the NASB was much more clear to me. I not only found the NLT an easier read, but I found it to shed some light and assisted my NASB study. In my view, the NLT is an excellent companion to go with your bible of choice for deep word study/soul searching.
I used to think, by the way, if it wasn't KJV, you could be led to error. I now realize that prayer, and having a receptive heart is of primary importance. If one can understand and read one translation better, one is more likely to USE the book. Use your friends who are strong in the word, your pastor, a good commentary (Mathew Henry expl) and more than one translation to reduce error in interpretation. Just my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need Companion Text, May 10, 2010

This review is from: New Living Translation : Holy Bible: Self-Help Edition (Paperback)
I love to listen to the Bible Alive! Dramatized: New Living Translation. I know it's got some translation issues, but it's well done and more accurate than TLB. For some reason there is a VERY conspicuous lack of online versions of this bible. The only one I've found is very hard to use. The publisher should place the old version online as a pdf, doc or txt file.

This Bible is great, especially for people who don't have time to translate the messages behind the scriptures. I recommend it to everyone who wants to understand the Word of God plain and simple...it also has suggested readings about various topics such as Love, Faith, Strength, etc...AND there's an Table of Contents in the front so you don't miss the Pastor's scripture reading trying to flip through the whole Bible!

The words are printed in standard size, so those who have trouble reading may need to use their glasses or another magnification tool...

Wonderful Bible and so easy to understand. I grew up with the King James version and they are like 2 very different languages in the understanding. What a Blessing.

The problem with this "translation," which is actually a full paraphrase, is the same as with all paraphrase and "dynamic equivalence" translations: the translation removes all the consistency of terms that God used to form chains of thought. In a word-for-word translation, the translation from the original languages is highly consistent in the use of what English words translate which Hebrew and Greek words, allowing one to follow, even in English, certain trains of thought that go throughout the Bible and are needful to more properly interpret the Bible as one consistent revelation of Truth. In addition, the NLT, just in its surface reading, is far from accurate as to what is said and intended at the basic level in the original languages. In my reading, I have found the NLT to say things and bring meanings into texts that just aren't there in the original language documents they used. They gave up virtually all that is good in an accurate presentation of Truth just to make it easy to read. Well, truth, not ease, is what the Bible is about. In my opinion, as concerning all paraphrases, this is not the Word of God at all; it is simply a commentary written in the form of scripture and is highly inaccurate.
