The book when received opened many memories for me. Growing up in nearby Niantic I always gazed at the old buildings and wondered how wonderful the city must have been. The book covers most of the great buildings of New London and clearly showed how important the city was, the people that lived there and what revitalization did to ruin the cities proud past. A wonderful book to sit and look back and open up your mind to how things were...and how you wish they were still.

Grew up in New London during the '50's and 60's. Walked every street and loved both the history and the beautiful old buildings. I remember the city before redevelopment....stupidest humans alive put that plan in action. While they did alleviate some of the rundown eyesores they also demololished so much of the flavor and character of the city with callous disregard. It really was a classy little town at one time.

This book shows the town in different stages from early development through to the 20th century with pictures of some incredibly beautiful streets that are now gone or radically changed.

I was fascinated and drawn into the photos and so glad someone put them together in book form. Ruddy gave very short but clear explanaitions of the events pictured as well as the locations ...enough to enhance the imagination. Felt like I did some time travel. I enjoyed this book and ordered the sequel...Reinventing New London.
Wish there were comparison photos......the old one alongside the new building or street that replaced it. I have not been back there in 12 years and sometimes get very homesick for the best little town in America to grow up in....sooooooo much to do and we really thought we were bored all summer!
