Nigel Cawthorne does a fine job here of introducing the general reader to the legendary fashion style known as the "New Look", with a mixture of text and numerous black-and-white and color illustrations, including drawings and period advertisements. In my opinion, the particular strength of the book is in the context that Cawthorne establishes for the development of the New Look, as he explains how the restrictive, often drab styles of the wartime years triggered the reaction that led to Christian Dior's lush, extravagant designs. Read this book in conjunction with the V&A Museum's 2007 volume _The Golden Age of Couture_ and Marie-France Pochna's biography _Christian Dior_.
