A more mature, more exciting, and most enjoyable story,
By A Customer
This review is from: New Lots (Hardcover)
The forth of Mr. Clarkson's novel has been proved that he is a more mature, more exciting storyteller than the former three Devlin series. To detour from that over-extended series has also proved that Mr. Clarkson is indeed a multi-level thriller writer who is better than most of those male writers indulged in such genre. The flow of the writing cut and burrow the terrain so freely that has made the reading very exciting and enjoyable. I knew at once that Mr. Clarkson is a fantastic writer once I had read his debut "And Justice for One" which was so good that I could not but had to recommend it to be purchased and translated into another language. "New Lots" is definitely a more mature, more energetic story with cool dialogues and plot. It is a far better one than the cardboard-like "Apaches(?)" by the "Sleepers"' writer, which I had pointed out that was a modern "Fantastic 7" copy but fell short. But definitely not these guys shown in the "New Lots." Congrats, Mr. Clarkson, smoke less and keep it coming, OK? God bless.

Good thriller,

I'm giving it 4 starts instead of 5 because of too much profanity, otherwise, it's good thriller, suspense and crime fiction till the end. Loyd Shaw is a good cop and sometimes he went over the line until he screwed up during restricted duty causing his boss to threaten him to do a dirty job with a team of losers of his choice or risk losing his pension, career, and his future.

A Good Action-Packed Police Thriller!,
By
This review is from: New Lots (Hardcover)
Overall, I'd rate Clarkson's New Lots 3 1/2 stars. It's filled with action, excitement and more action and excitement; and on these dimensions I'd give the book 4 1/2 stars. However, the plot, which is somewhat simplistic, and the characters, which are only fairly well-developed, deserve only 2 1/2 stars. New Lots is a book that I think you'll enjoy a lot when you're in the mood for total escapism and not much more.

Oh my gosh!,

This book was a roller coaster ride from start to finish, and I loved every minute of it. It was so complex and gritty that I couldn't put it down. This is my first experience with John Clarkson - I found the book by accident and I'm glad I did. It was thoroughly enjoyable and frightening at the same time. If this book is representative of his other work, then I can't wait to get my hands on his other novels. What a read!

Very realistic, well-paced police novel.,

"New Lots" is a police novel about two groups vying for control of a Brooklyn housing project. It's a very realistic story in which locations and action sequences are described so clearly that they're easy to visualize with your mind's eye. The book is very well-paced, and the author is adept at building and easing tension.

A disappointment,

There are lots of books out there with mature writers if that's all one wants. I like to identify with the 'good guy' and tune out of every day life, so, he just needs to get back to Devlin and the kick 'butt' action.

Good fast read!,

Takes off like a rocket and never lets up. Police procedurals are my favorite, and this does not disappoint. Looking forward to more from this author.

Excellent police drama!,
This review is from: New Lots (Hardcover)
Although I missed the Devlin character, this story was well written as expected from Clarkson. Although I wish his editor had caught many of the typos and missing or misplaced words! Those were numerous enough to be distracting. Clarkson's sense for reality is exquisite. Even though the violence may not appeal to most people, I suspect sadly, it's closer to real life than not. If you are looking for a fast paced police thriller with lots of action and Steven Segalism...this is the book for you! Rogue cop about to lose his pension if he's booted off the force a year before his retirement. His commanding officer assigns him and a cast of equally volatile cops to end the gang wars over an appartment complex. A war ensues between the crack dealers who use the appartment complex as a base and the muslim gang hired by the complex owner to get them out. Enter Loyd (with on 'l') the rogue cop and his cohorts and they are in it for the long haul! You won't be disappointed.
