Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

When this book was first published in 1976, a Florida newspaper refused to advertise it as "too prurient for the general public." Happily, the book became a classic anyway and has gone through several editions over 25 years. This update merely strengthens its credentials as the best all-around sex manual for older adults. There is thorough coverage of the standard topics: the effects of normal aging, medical problems, and drugs on sexuality and how to overcome roadblocks; physical and emotional sexual fitness; singlehood and relationships; sexual enhancement tips; dating, remarriage, and one's children; and finding help. This new edition incorporates same-sex relationships more equitably. In addition, readers are given permission not to be strongly interested in sex a refreshing change from the "super-orgasms can change your life!" approach of so many sex manuals. Lewis is a physician and head of the International Longevity Center, and Butler is a clinical psychotherapist. Both have other books on aging to their credit. For all public libraries, no excuses get several copies. [The previous edition was featured in "Sex Texts Come Out of the Closet," a collection development feature in LJ 10/1/97. 5.0 out of 5 stars But if you are not looking for advice on HRT..., April 29, 2005
By
Liz M (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The New Love and Sex After 60 (Paperback)
I hate to see this book represented by 1 reviewer giving it 1 star. I teach in a gerontology program and I found this book very useful in preparing my class on sexuality. The most important message I got from this book is that sex after 60 is normal and natural, but different from sex earlier in life. One point I did not see in my other reading--there is a discrepancy in the number of men and women that increases with age so that by age 85, there are 41 men for every 100 women. I have read many proposed solutions to this, all assuming that men have an innate lower life expectancy than do women. Dr. Bulter's approach is that men need to learn to take better care of their health so that they live longer. This was the most positive, pro-male solution I have read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written & Helpful, August 18, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The New Love and Sex After 60 (Paperback)
"The New Love and Sex After 60" is a well written and helpful book. There is no question that older men and women may want to remain sexually active much longer than might have been supposed. The authors explain some of the normal changes brought about by aging and changing relationships. They also discuss possible issues brought about by illness. The tone throughout is upbeat and positive and the authors offer practical advice for maintaining a healthy intimate relationship. It's probably time for another revision that would cover a few more recent developments in medicine but this book is still worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Resource, August 1, 2011
This review is from: The New Love and Sex After 60 (Paperback)
People my age have an increasing amount of information about sex and romance, but certainly not enough. So much info in this area is geared to the 25-45 market.

THE NEW LOVE AND SEX AFTER 60, however, is a very good resource for us who face both the challenges and opportunities of life after 60 or 70.

It's not as sexy or warm as SEASONED ROMANCE or GRANDPA DOES GRANDMA, but I found it chock-filled with interesting and even inspirational material. Just having Dear Abby do a promotional paragraph is an eye-opener.

Robert N. Butler and Myrna I. Lewis are to be commended for fueling the fire amongst us golden oldies!
