5.0 out of 5 stars every new manager's necessity
Well written, to the point, easy to refer to and use . So helpful it should be kept on the desk top within easy reach for handy reference. Sure to have well worn pages. In particular, I found the section on process of active listening insightful and not the usual run of the mill
tips. This is an extremely useful guide.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
I was hoping for more, but the book is very basic. I learned most of this in my undergraduate management degree. This would be good for someone fresh out of school, not someone moving up the chain after 5+ years of experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Read....., January 15, 2009
This review is from: The New Manager's Tool Kit: 21 Things You Need to Know to Hit the Ground Running (Paperback)
I am an HR professional, and I am always trying to ensure that I am effective in what I do. I want to ensure that when I am working with the variety of people in my organization(s) that I am sensitive to their needs, while still remaining as effective as I can be with regards to policy and corporate mission. This is not easy to do given current economic times. This book provides managers with easily adoptable methods of keeping the "human" side of the HR function. For example, in Chapter 8, Ask then listen.... one must perform a similar assessment of performance on themselves (360-degree)and have the sense of professionalism to extrapolate and learn from the insights found.

This review is from: The New Manager's Tool Kit: 21 Things You Need to Know to Hit the Ground Running (Paperback)
Organizations regularly claim that people are their most important asset. But managers usually know much more about maintaining their buildings than developing and supporting their people. The promise of treating your people like the most important resource is compounded by the reality of a rapidly changing workforce. The New Manager's Tool Kit is for all those managers that want to translate that promise into reality.

Useful at every level of an organization, it is a practical and comprehensive guide to becoming a skilled manager of people. The organizations that adopt the approaches clearly presented in this groundbreaking book are likely to increase their chances of thriving on a sustainable basis into the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true guide to becoming a better leader..., January 10, 2011
By
This book is really worth it, very useful, comprehensive and enlightening, it showed me what I was already doing right with my team and direct reports, what I really need to focus on, and what other team leaders around me are doing wrong, and even a way to eveluate my boss and his boss...
I would highly recommend this for new team leaders and managers-to-be as well as managers...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read but largely all about how not to get sued, which is a pity really, January 20, 2012

This review is from: The New Manager's Tool Kit: 21 Things You Need to Know to Hit the Ground Running (Paperback)
Well written, well organized and easy to read, which are all important to me because time is precious to me. But ... large tracts of the real estate in this book are comprised of how not be a bigot and how not to treat your employees like dirt basically, which seems a pity really because most of treating people right is directly related to getting that much more out of them, and that really seems like common sense and just good business to me. I've worked in some hostile working environments, probably because I've worked in many different places, and I've been called a Damn Yankee, a Damn Jew, a Damn Socialist, and a few other things - and I'm none of them *shrug* :) ... but still it seems a pity that a book like this feels obliged to be spending most of its time teaching the obvious.
