Mardi Gras Classics,
By
This review is from: New Mardi Gras Classics (MP3 Download)
I can't wait for Mardi Gras to get here so I can play this CD for my friends. From the first track, this CD is upbeat and lots of fun. The liner notes state that some of these songs were written some 40 years old, but they were just released this year, meaning you most probably have not heard any of these 16 Mardi Gras tunes ever before. In the interest of "full disclosure", I know one of the guys that helped put this CD together, however if I had not liked it, I would not have gone though the effort of reviewing it. But, I did like this CD - so much I am listing all the tracks with a little comment about each one.
1 - Koo Koo La Ba - A traditional Fats Domino sounding tune with a yacky yack sax, and great New Orleans style voice. 2 - This Is Endymion - Interesting hip Austin/Reggae sounding song with Leonard Cohen type lyrics, an immediate favorite. 3 - At The Mardi Gras - A Rolling Stone style song with a nice "drunk" rhythm and great harmonica, over all a good rocking piece of work. 4 - King Zulu - This guy has a low voice singing to a typical New Orleans beat with a stoned B3 organ pumping up the accompaniment. 5 - Mardi Gras In Evangeline - OK so Cajun music is not my favorite, but this is presented in a digestible way with what sounds like, oh my, a Hawaiian guitar solo; very clever. 6 - I See The Parade - Wild piano man Bobby Lounge brings up the spirit with his typical moaning yelling and 88-keyboard rocket ship. 7 - When The Levees Broke - You can file this song under the same category with songs like, The Purple People Eater, Witch Doctor, Long Tall Texan and other classic rock and roll novelty masterpieces. 8 - Prettiest Girl On Mardi Gras - This may be the break out hit of all these songs on this CD; the lead singer wants to be the "prettiest girl" but he has the deepest voice I have ever heard; hilarious, another novelty song. 9 - Do The Mardi Gras - With lyrics like "Gina cut my yard and I'll make you the queen of my Mardi Gras" how can you not like this song! 10 - Mardi Gras On The Mind - This is the first bluegrass song I have ever heard, I am not into bluegrass, but I can live with this tune, what the heck, it's Mardi Gras. The band credited for this recording is the Petty Bones from Louisiana. 11 - Mardi Gras Jones - Here is a story about a cool dude song to a moving blues tune with a whispering type voice.

I liked it so much I had to buy a bunch as gifts for friends. I especially liked that this was new music, not just the same old tunes we have heard over and over.
