3.0 out of 5 stars New Medicines gives 20cc's of Life to Dead Poetic, June 30, 2004
This review is from: New Medicines (Audio CD)
Dead Poetics debut record, 4 wall black mail, was a solid effort. While it may take them another record or two to bring some real solid originality to the music scene, they are definetly improving and New Medicines is already a step in the right direction. This time the albums theme is more focused and the songs flow really well together. It was natural for the screaming to be pushed aside for more of the beautiful singing voices this band eluded too on their first record.

The lyrics also have improved and feel less derivative and vague. Some of the best lines can be found in the very first track, taste the red hands. "There is a grocery of dirty words for people just like you, but only for people like you. I'll recite the words, backstabbers, and money whores, and dirty rotten millionares, always wanting more."

Words like these truly make one wonder how dead the poet really is in this band. It seems very much alive to me. Musically the variation from one song to the next, again has drastically improved. Songs no longer mesh into a guitar riff blur after the first 5 tracks. The only thing this album truly lacks is an epic ending, a problem also found on the first record.

At this pace Dead Poetic is definetly headed for a masterful third record. They may get lost in the mix of screaming/singing hard rock bands, but if you take a chance on them, you'll add a great cd to your collection. They are not emo, they don't have sad pathetic whiney lyrics. They are a modern rock band with emo influences, but without the cheesy lyrics.

Dead Poetic is a Christian band. As Christian artists one relys upon the leading of God when writing new music. Okay, now forget that Dead Poetic is a Christian band for a minute. When writing music it is natural over time that an artist would progress in their songwriting ability and technic. Who is to say that that technic is wrong or "selling out"....obviously the people who thought the band was supposed to keep writing the same music for the rest of their life. That would be exciting now wouldn't it. The music world would just be a great thing now wouldn't it. It's a shame that the 1% of nonmusical people who get a rise out of bashing artists because they write WHAT THEY FEEL don't have the final say so HUH?

With that said....this album is a step forward for Dead Poetic. The songwriting is more complex, and the lyrics are just as good as on the last album....if not better.

I encourage you not to listen to the naysayers, and give this album a shot. If you are a true supporter of Dead Poetic, then you will like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting better!, February 2, 2005
By
This review is from: New Medicines (Audio CD)
DP's first album, Four Wall Blackmail, hinted at some great song and lyric writing. But, it was one of those first efforts that sounded good from an engineering perspective, but suffered from a lack of direction from the producer(s). The songs were there, but there was that one key element missing.

New Medicines is a giant step into a better direction. Brandon plays up his great melodies and harmonies a little more, and the writing has had time to stew and develop naturally. Nothing sounds forced. The screams can detract in less experienced hands, but here it only adds and deepens. Check "Dream Club Murders" (great chorus), "Vanus Empty", and "Glass in the Trees" (another great chorus...beautifully eerie, especially given the subject matter) to hear them at their peak. The sophmore slump has turned into the sophmore slam (sorry, that was cheesy).

There are few spots where the things seem to drag out a little too long. Few bands have been able to beat this shortcoming, so I don't hold it against them too much.

Don't write them off as another of the new breed of emo-screamo whatever bands. There's something sparkling here. Hopefully Dead Poetic works hard and keeps things rolling. If things keep going the way they are for them, their third release will excel.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better ones out there, December 12, 2004

I bought this cd thinking it was going to be like Emery (another band of the Tooth&Nail record label. I was kinda right, kinda wrong. This band seems more "together" and mature. They have a little less unique sound but it isn't something i'm complaining about. The lyrics seem emotional and close to the hear of the singer/screamer, and what i've read, makes more sense. All and All i think this is a really good cd. If it had a better ending i might give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!, July 18, 2004

I bought this cd a couple of weeks after it was released. I was unaware of it's release, so I went and got it as soon as possible. I am a big fan of Four-Wall Blackmail, so I knew I had to have their new one. I went to buy it, I popped it into my cd player, and now (a few months later) it's still the cd that I listen to the most. I can't get enough of this album! It's truly something remarkable. It's one of those albums that comes along every once in a great while and just blows you away. It's pure genius; from the first track to the last track and every song in between. GO OUT AND BUY IT NOW! (trust me)

5.0 out of 5 stars Change is good, June 25, 2004

An amazing cd. 4 Wall Blackmail used to be my model for a great cd, but now I have this one. Dead Poetic has matured so much since their last recording, and I believe that that shows in the music. If people are too immature to see that and are too concerned with why bands shouldn't try to make a living then they should go listen to some poor hobo on the side of the road b/c at least he isn't trying to make it big, right? This is by far a work of art superior to four wall blackmail, although I still love four wall blackmail. I'm just tired of people saying that since its different its not as good; actually, this cd is more talented and complex than four wall blackmail-4wall bm is kinda slow, lotta screaming, pretty simple-nothing i couldn't learn by playing along to. For their new cd, Dead Poetic has taken their potential to get better after 4w bm and realized it. A must-have for any cd collection and an incredible masterpiece of the melodic hardcore/indie genre.

Their first EP was great..but this just blew me away. I first heard "New Medicines" on the solid state tour website and i was just amazed. I bought the cd the first day it came out and I haven't taken it out of my cd player since. If you're into the screamo genre i recommend this.

i first started listening to dead poetic when i came across one of their songs about 2 years ago accidently on kazaa. their music is amazing and NEW MEDICINES is one of the best sophmore albums i've ever heard. it encompasses the sound of FOUR WALL BLACKMAIL, but this time around they diversify a bit more to make an all around amazing cd. the lyrics are heartfelt and the screaming is the best i've ever heard. i recommened this cd to everyone who's willing to listen because once you start, you won't be able to stop!
