Editorial Reviews

Review

The New Millennium Manual is a timely and insightful guide through the maze of idle speculation currently surrounding the dawning of a new millennium. This highly readable and well researched book is a valuable contribution for understanding the millennial issues of our day as well as the treatment of the subject throughout the history of the church and in other religious movements. I gladly commend this useful manual to pastors, church leaders, and interested persons seeking answers to the questions surrounding "the end times". -- David S. Dockery, president, Union University

A reliable guide to the astonishing varieties of endtimes speculation - and a call to biblical sanity. Just the book to give to that sincere friend terrified by all the apocalyptic predictions of cosmic collapse in the year 2000. -- Ronald J. Sider, president, Evangelicals for Social Action

An important book on the coming millennium. Level-headed and balanced - a fascinating volume that offers a much needed historical and cultural perspective. -- Ruth Tucker, author, Another Gospel: Alternative Religions and the New Age Movement

For those who want some historical and spiritual perspective on the current craze, The New Millennium Manual has just the right prescription. It casts a doubtful eye on the divinations of would-be prophets, showing how frequently they have been wrong. Yet it never loses sight of the Christians great hope, that Christ shall come again, and that Gods eternal kingdom will make all things right. These three wise travelers point to Christ the Morning Star, and urge the church to bear witness today for his coming reign. -- Joel A. Carpenter, provost, Calvin College

If you feel like you are free falling into the year 2000, this is the parachute you need to achieve a safe, steady landing. This sensible, balanced, well-written book by three soundly evangelical scholars is an indispensable guide through the fascinating twists and turns of popular millennial theological speculation. Its user friendly and chock full of pertinent information. Dont leave the second millennium without it! -- William David Spencer, editor, Chanting Down Babylon: A Rastafari Reader

This volumes joins distinguished earlier books by Paul Boyer, Timothy Weber, and Dwight Wilson in charting American Christian fascination with the end of time. The great success of the authors here is to combine deep historical learning with well-informed Christian wisdom. With the year 2000 dead ahead, the book is as timely as it is expert. Giving yourself a few evenings with The New Millennium Manual will fortify you against going off half-cocked as the year 2000 approaches. -- Mark Noll, professor of Christian thought, Wheaton College

This review is from: The New Millennium Manual: A Once and Future Guide (Paperback)
This is a book that is easy to read in its 2-column format and is very interesting. Of course, it was released in 1999 to coincide with Y2K, and it probably won't be a book around five years from now, but I thought the authors did an overall good job with the history. It's a manual that I will keep on my bookshelf to reference whenever I have questions about a group that is predicting the end. The art, cartoons, photos and other illustrations make this a very pleasant read, and they have a complete index at the end to help you reference specific groups or names.
