5.0 out of 5 stars Easier than Cross-stitch: Unique, Fabulous Results!, March 22, 1998

This review is from: A New Model Book for Spanish Stitch (Paperback)
THE EMBROIDERY BOOK for embroiderers who are searching for techniques and patterns to produce completely reversible work on ruffled collars and cuffs... THE EMBROIDERY BOOK for Novice Embroiderers who want to work something unique with a very easy stitch ... THE RESOURCE BOOK, a must for re-enactors and living history fans who need patterns from predominantly the 17th century.

A New Modelbook for Spanish Stitch packs a tremendous and succinct amount of easily understood information and design in only 28 pages. This slim volume gives a brief but thorough history of the Spanish Stitch and then launches into wonderful easily read explanations/illustrations that make even the most complex designs possible with a bit of planning and practice. Instructions address the actual stitch (double-running, Holbein, or Spanish stitch depending on reference point), use of pattern filling and also use of multiple colors. There are 80 designs of varying complexity collected from historical sources. Individual elements within the more complex patterns can easily be modified for additional less ornate designs also. For those who wish to design samplers of their own, there is also discussion of modern materials for interpreting period-type work.

A New Modelbook for Spanish Stitch is a fine investment that I heartily recommend to those needle-and-thread artisans looking for something, unique and beautiful requiring a single stitch which is even easier than cross stitch.
