Book Description

June 19, 2001
The Best Advice from the Best Experts -- Other Moms!

Who better to give you the real low-down on baby's first year than hundreds of other moms who have been there, changed that. Here are more than 800 tips from experienced moms who've contributed their favorite, most effective, and inventive solutions to help you cope with diapering, feeding, nursing and bottle-feeding, bathing, traveling, sleeping, crying, teething, playing, baby-proofing, postpartum adjustment, new-parent stress, spousal issues, and more. These mom-tested tips, amusing anecdotes, money- and time-saving ideas, safety hints, and heartfelt words of encouragement -- all approved by a Harvard Medical School pediatrician -- give you the real-life answers to all your baby-care questions.

Here are just a few of the gems you'll find in this book:

* To soothe colic, drape a warm towel over a large gym ball, put baby tummy-down, and roll her gently back and forth.

* Revive your Crock-Pot to warm bottles by your bedside.

* Toss a piece of coal into your diaper pail to eliminate odors.

* Use a paste of Kaopectate and cornstarch to clear up diaper rash.

* To soothe swollen breasts, try bags of frozen peas, warm tea bags, or disposable diapers filled with warm water.

* Make your own nonskid socks with 3-D fabric paint.

* Schedule wellness checkups for 1 p.m. so you get the first appointment after the lunch break -- less waiting!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bathing, feeding, crying, diaper-changing, teething, marital stress, colic, traveling, postpartum adjustment, baby-proofing the house stay-at-home mom Mary Jeanne Menna has been through it all. Her The New Mom's Manual: Over 800 Tips and Advice from Hundreds of Moms for Baby's First Year, which will be advertised in Child magazine, should appeal to new mothers in need of advice and community. Menna presents an exhaustive array of information all vetted by Harvard Medical School pediatrics professor and physician Michael Shannon. Dads may be disappointed, though: the emphasis, as the title suggests, is almost exclusively on moms. B&w illus. Agent, Anne Hawkins.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Mom's Manual, June 20, 2001
This review is from: The New Mom's Manual: Over 800 Tips and Advice from Hundreds of Moms for Baby's First Year (Paperback)
What a super approach Mary Jeanne Menna has taken in this book for helping a new mom with all of the unknown fears she is sure to have. I have often found in the past that most baby books can be dull and also confusing especially when mom is stressed out from a crying child. All of the moms that have helped Menna write her book with their "Been There-Done That" problem solving ideas certainly should help a new mom overcome a lot of her fear before problems arise. I strongly recommend the book to new dads too as there will be times when mom is away. The book gives very simple solutions to the every day problems of a new baby in the home. The book is entertaining to read so mom and dad both will remember in the future some of the solutions when a problem arises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good tips from today and yesteryear, July 19, 2001

I really liked this book (my DD 4 months old). My mother commented that some of the best tips are things she used to do when she had her children. Many parents today don't know about these tried-and-true remedies from the good old days. I think the post partum and spouse chapters were excellent. Tells it like it is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Baby Shower Gift, July 19, 2001

I loved this book....it makes the greatest baby shower gift. I always relied on the advice from my girlfriends over most of the material I read and this book is just that. Most books assume you've covered the basics and really as a new mom I didn't even know some of the simple stuff like swaddling. I've given this book to pregnant friends already. I especially like the colic information. My first baby had colic and most people just assume this is something you just have live through....I wish I'd had some of these tips then.
