I Just LOVE IT....Honest i do!!!! 50 STARS!,

This review is from: New Morning: The Paris Concert John Hammond (DVD)
Okay....I've loved John Hammond since he debuted in the 60's and nearly 40 years ...well actually 40 years later he's not hanging on but playing and singing stronger than ever! This man allmost single handedly kept solo acoustic blues going for many many years and had there been any justice would have been featured on MTV's Unplugged to let the kids hear the real deal...but enough...This DVD is to be reviewed... its a stunner! A brilliant and very very generous 2 hour set featuring many of his best arrangements and signature tunes...filmed well , recorded well...and played well! The bonus 10 minute "interview with John Hammond" is super...heck worth the $20 on its own...as he rehearses...walks around Paris and discusses his life and music...WOW WOW WOW.. THIS is a Desert Island DVD for me ...and I've only got a couple thousand so that tells you what I think of it.. If you are reading this you must be a fan of the man...resist no longer...its a great DEAL and a solid program... You'll be satisfied and tickled too!

A Blues Master at his Peak,
By Charlie "Pinedog" (Upstate New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Morning: The Paris Concert John Hammond (DVD)
I've been enjoying John Hammond's music for 30 years. I've seen him live many times. His career has had it's ups and downs, and so has his music. The word "inspired" is often overused in reviews but is well deserved here...not just because of his performance but by the passion for this genre that he shares with his audience. Between songs, John relates personal stories of run ins with many of the present and especially former blues legends that have now passed on. John pays homage to all his major influences on this incredible DVD by delivering performances that would make any of them look down upon this aging blues master and smile. John is not superhuman, and makes a couple honest mistakes with lyrics..which could easily have been edited out. I love that they weren't. This is the best solo performance of any artist in my video collection. New Morning, The Paris Concert is an excellently filmed, wonderfully recorded, intimate two hour up close and personal concert with a true Bluesman at the peak of his craft.

Finally a concert video!,
By WC (Pennsyltuckey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: New Morning: The Paris Concert John Hammond (DVD)
I've been waiting 15 years for a concert video of John Hammond. All I've been able to compile until now has been 2 half hour Austin City Limits performances and an old guitar instructional video with mostly talking. This is everything I've waited for. I love that there are so many songs on the DVD. The camera work is good without too many jump cuts trying to spice up the action. I wish there were a little more shots that included both his head and hands at the same time. John's voice is in it's prime so there was no better time to record a concert than 2004 when this one was. The interview segment is also very good with John playing pieces of additional songs not in the concert. I've seen John live 5 times and now I can watch him anytime I want! There is so little video available of John Hammond that if you are a fan you should also pick up the new Homespun Tapes instructional guitar video. Even if you don't want to learn guitar there is a lot of playing and interesting stories told with split screen closeups of both hands. If you ever read this John, Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
