There is no dearth of name dictionaries available. Most of them include information about the origins and use of names, and most of them provide adequate lists of names for general use. For specialized interests, however, consider Kolatch's work on the correspondence in meaning between English and Hebrew given names. This volume is a revised, expanded version of the author's earlier work, The Name Dictionary ( LJ 4/1/67). More names have been added, and the system of transliterating Hebrew has been changed to comply with modern practice. The dictionary includes Hebrew equivalents for all names listed, background on the Jewish naming process, and appendixes on popular Yiddish names, unisex Hebrew names, and others.
