4.0 out of 5 stars 511-It's here, it's not an import, and it's far from perfect, October 29, 2003
This review is from: New Order - 511 (DVD)
However, that does not mean that this was a terrible show or a terrible DVD. Far from it. This is the maturation of New Order, this is New Order without Gillian, this is New Order Midlife, this is New Order pure and simple. I've watched and listen to this DVD excessively, enjoying it each and every time. Yes, it was filmed in the daylight. Yes, there is something missing from the stage show, but it is truly a buffet for the ears. From the opening chords of "Crystal" through the overplayed "Blue Monday" (before playing, Sumner jokes "we'll play 'Rock the Shack.' Or 'Blue Monday.' Raise your hands if you want 'Rock the Shack' or take out your ------- if you want 'Blue Monday'") the concert is electrifying, a great show and a great listen. There are 5 Joy Divison songs and 11 New Order tunes (hence the title) and all sound fresh and well-rehearsed, and it is great to hear Sumner's raw, unpolished "ooohing" during "Temptation."
Visually, it's a bit droll, what with the rain, mud-soaked concert goers (you'll spy some families here and there), and the little glimmers of daylight. But that makes it fun, because this is a testament to New Order's dedication and ability. They could have easily backed out ("I'd rather be home watching Stars on Sunday," Sumner jokes) but instead, the band and the fans rock out and have a great time.
This is a great DVD--better than 316, in my opinion--and worth watching over and over again for any New Order fan or anyone who simply wants to hear a band playin at their best.

5.0 out of 5 stars this brought a smile to my face, September 28, 2004

I must state that I have heard of New Order but never listened to their music; furthermore, I'm a die hard Joy Division fan, and, only recently, I learned that New Order was Joy Division minus the original singer. I feel foolish - real flippin' foolish.

I bought this DVD when I noticed that " She Lost Control" was on the set list. That song is phenomenal, a personal favorite for decades. Damn, the band nailed it and then some. I mean, they tore that thing right into the ground.

Anyway, the entire concert is just incredible. Now, I am a New Order fan. It was nice seeing middle aged men who were being themselves and delivering a mind blowing performance. There were no costumes or fancy stage productions, just musicians in t-shirts and jeans who can drive a crowd into a frenzy.

The audio is well produced and the camera work is nicely done. I was entranced and found myself on my feet boppin' around. I'm not exagerating; the performance is that powerful and fun.

I am truly sorry that I went all these years without having New Order in my collection of music. That will be remedied.

Buy this DVD...

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than what I expected, November 4, 2004
This review is from: New Order - 511 (DVD)
I have never seen New Order live, but had read comments on what they were like on stage. Although they are not the most exciting band to see live, they sure put on a show on this DVD. It was better thant what I expected!!! And the DTS sound makes it even better. Definitely a GREAT buy for New Order fans, especially if you have never seen them live (like myself).

4.0 out of 5 stars good dvd, but not as good as "316", October 25, 2003

This review is from: New Order - 511 (DVD)
I'm not an "audiophile/technophile/etc" so i can't really offer an expert opinion on the merits of this dvd's sound/video quality, all i can say is that it looks and sounds just fine on my television. As a reviewer stated before, the Joy Division songs should have been left alone. Sumner's voice is just too different and doesn't carry the same weight as Ian Curtis, so the songs just don't sound right. They should have let Peter Hook sing those JD songs. And i'm not too crazy about the new songs either, so that leaves the usual "hits." MOst of these songs are also on the 316 dvd, and they just sound/look better there. Maybe it's because the concert was played at night, maybe cuz it was their first show in a few years, but either way, i enjoy the 316 dvd more. THis one is still great, but having the 316 available just takes a bit away from it. Otherwise, great buy, and cheap, too!

New Order has spent years refining their stage show, and the lighting that accompanies a New Order show greatly enhances the experience...especially with the almost signature "New Order blue" lighting scheme that brings even more to the sensory experience. secondly, i don't care, even a little bit, about mud covered drunk morons...and i really don't want to have them occupying half my screen during the best parts of a truly great song like "Temptation"...this is just offensive and stupid. overall, this release reeks of indifferent production and design, although the band itself is obviously having a good time and the twilight rendition of "Your Silent Face" nearly redeems this otherwise forgettable insult to any fan (and, hence, the second star).

Just watching the electrifying guitar work in "She's Lost Control" is worth the price. Yes they ARE older and not the pretty "young men" of the past, but on the whole are much better musicians. It is nice to see and hear them laugh and clown around on the stage.I do miss Gillian as she was not performing, but Phil Cunningham more than pleases. As for requests,I would LOVE for New Order to re-release the 5.8.6. video as a dvd.

... It is true that some "classics" come off less than excellent (Temptation; Digital). But as a long time New Order fan who is old enough to have seen them three times between the mid 80s and early 90s I have to say 1) they were not much to see back then (except for Hooky who managed to play to the audience); 2) this is a far better live band and their sets are much more generous than they were back in the day. The addition of a back ground singer and experienced guitarist really beef up the sound and some tracks (Your Silent Face, Transmission, She's Lost Contol) are aural delights. How anyone could complain about the technical merits of this DVD is beyond me. (I have listened to this DVD several times on a pair of Grados, and, no offense, but Your Silent Face sounds even better than on Power,Corruption, and Lies; Morris' decision to add a high hat and extra beats in the last two minutes is GENIUS--the song rocks at the end; not to mention the guitars (both Gibsons; one of them a Warlock), sound great, especially on the JD songs. As someone who HAS spend time in a studio, I can attest to the fact that the recording is well balanced). Finally, I find the fact that it is outdoors and during the day rather refreshing: the point is the music, not the...lighting. In sum, a great DVD. P.S., I don't know how this DVD looks on "TV" but on my computer the picture is superb. Folks: digital is the standard.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wished I were there..., July 31, 2005
This review is from: New Order - 511 (DVD)
This presentation is the New Order so few of us get to see. Fantastic and enigmatic! Britains finest served with some of the bands best tracks old and new.

By all means new fans should get a copy of this great live footage. The new material from Get Ready fits with the classics. I could go on and on, but the proof is watching the performance for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan-Freakin'-Tastic!, September 30, 2003

After viewing my $28 imported to USA copy of this DVD I can only say..."WOW"...Now you're probably now thinking..."How in the heck could this idiot pay $28 for this DVD he could have picked up on cdnow-dot-com for $15 plus shipping? Well, I'll tell you now that I would have paid three times the amount I did just to own a copy of a concert from the greatest band of MY generation.

It seems as if New Order has followed me around quietly my entire adult life and written their songs about things that have happened to me and written more songs about my feelings about those things that have happened to me.

The disc's mixture of 5 Joy Division and 11 New Order (hence the DVD title "511") songs is a joy to see and hear. The boys look and sound great. Barney (who my Westie Barney is named after) and the guys show none the worse for the wear. The planet is very lucky the guys decided to reform and give their fans what they wanted----MORE NEW ORDER!

Daytime showtime nonwithstanding this set COOKS WITH GAS! The sound mix is not as bad as other reviewers here will have you believe and seeing the audience have fun in the mud isn't irritating at all. Isn't having fun what New Order is all about anyway?

The signature Peter Hook bass sound is, as always, prevalent in all the songs in the set and Barney's vocals are as strong as ever. My only question is..."Where is Gillian?"....

The offering of "She's Lost Control" made me feel as if Ian Curtis was in my living room performing just for me and my wife.

If you've bought this DVD and don't want it anymore...SEND IT TO ME. If you haven't acquired it yet and are a New Order fan then I suggest you rush to get it before it's out of print.

I find myself at a loss for words to respond to those who would pan this release. Those people probably need Prozac to level off their anger.
