Book Description

October 1991
It was a time of changing values and institutions, of a growing fear of communism and, at the same time, a growing sense of domestic tranquility and the importance of the family. It was a time of great growth and development in the city, and a departure from many of the old traditions and customs that had helped to define what New Orleans was all about.

From the Back Cover

Remember when Mardi Gras was cancelled in 1951 in tribute to the men fighting the Korean War? Surely you were there for Elvis Presley's visit to the Municipal Auditorium in 1956, and you must recall the first time you crossed the brand-new Greater New Orleans Bridge. Remember the A-line and Trapeze line in dresses, and the milk bottle on top of the Cloverland Dairy? Mary Lou Widmer recalls for readers these and many other images and events that together define the decade. Packed with photographs, her remembrances will delight and entertain all who lived through this unique decade in the city of New Orleans and will intrigue all those who have a special fascination with the past of the Crescent City. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

THE DECADE OF THE FIFTIES was the bookmark of the century, the time when all the old traditions carried over from the last century were shed, like a snake's skin, and every phase of life had new rules, as opposite from the old as fire is from ice. Read the first page
