Both my boys love the Wiilliam Gillock piano pieces. They are fun, with energy, and it's great when boys find songs they can sit still and practice (!). What's best about this series is the CD that comes with them. It has all the songs, at 2 or 3 different speeds for each song, so you can listen to the song to learn it (eg, if you are a Suzuki student and/or your sight-reading is a little slower than your performance ability) and then you can play along with it at the different speeds. The recorded songs are not just piano solo, either -- they have a jazz band accompaniment - eg, incl trumpets, drums, etc. I'll be honest, I would have preferred at least one track to be just the piano version, no accompaniment, to make listening to the piano part simpler (coz I'm used to Suzuki music learning). But my 10-yr-old likes the other instruments coming in too, and it makes it easier to count the off-beat jazz rhythms, when you can 'hear' another part of the tune in your head keeping you on track. So thumbs up all round, I guess. Great value collection. I'll definitely be looking for more of this in the next level up when they advance out of this series.

In spite of my rudimentary level of piano playing skill, this music is so well composed that even one at my level can master! This music is fun for both the most accomplished players as well as those of mediocre talent as myself. When you play these masterfully composed, bluesy jazz compositions with any degree of feeling, it sounds impressive! Although I am not familiar with William Gillock outside of this series, he surely puts a wonderful touch on these jazz compositions.
I used to play the compositions from the first two books of this series when I began playing the piano back in the late 70's and early 80's. Somehow, of all of my music, these two books were lost. When I discovered that they remain in print (or perhaps reprint), I immediately snatched them up without a second thought! If you love jazzy, bluesy piano music, this is a MUST buy!
