Book Description

May 28, 1996
The complete lesbian resource guide, Our Right to Love instantly became a classic when it was first published in 1978. Now fully revised and expanded for the 1990s, this new edition includes over 60 articles and interviews covering the many aspects of lesbian life: relationships, sexuality, health, activism, education and sports, religion and spirituality, the law and legal issues, multiethnic lesbian experience, and lesbian culture. A group of essays explores the lesbian experience across cultures (African American, Latina, Asian, Native American) and age groups. Interviews with notable lesbians Martina Navratilova, Melissa Etheridge, Margarethe Cammermeyer, and Minnesota State Representative Karen Clark examine the particular experiences of highly visible out lesbians. An extensive bibliography, resource lists and index make this the complete lesbian reference.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Adding 20 new articles to the 1978 first edition's 40, editor Vida disposes them in nine topical sections: "Relationships" (including lesbian parenting), "Sexuality," "Health," "Lesbian Activism," "Education," "Religion and Spirituality," "Lesbians and the Law," "The Spectrum of Lesbian Experience" (i.e., black, Latina, Asian, etc.), and "Lesbian Culture." The section on sexuality is of particular interest because of its attention to sexual dysfunctions, their causes, and treatment options. The annotated bibliography and listing of lesbian organizations continue to make this weighty book useful to general and specialized collections alike. Whitney Scott

5.0 out of 5 stars AN IMPROVED CLASSIC, July 24, 2000
This review is from: New Our Right to Love: A Lesbian Resource Book (Paperback)
Since its orginal publication in the late 70's this invaluable resource guide and classic has become much more inclusive in its contents and has addressed issues impacting on every aspect of a Lesbian's life. Now as we find ourselves in a new century we find that the culture is changing its views about Lesbians and Gays. At every major religious denominational convention, the status of both groups have been debated. Vermont's stand in recognizing unions among Lesbian and Gay couples has called the nation to rethink its so-called definition of marriage and the privileges that go with it.

In this century of such rapid change this resource stands as the major guide to enable Lesbians to deal with the issues that will face them. Several of the areas that I found enlightening was that of religion/spirituality and the vast spectrum of lesbian experience that is inclusive of all groups. Patriarchial religion is the greatest stumbling block in denying Lesbians their humanity and right to love. How individual Lesbians have dealt with religious patriarchy and at the same time keeping their spirituality intact is a feat within itself. This is a book which everyone should read as our culture and society becomes more accepting of Lesbians and their lifestyles. It is a resource which provides invaluable information and hope for a better future.
