to a Siberian pet owner, this one is it! It covers basic care that all pet owners need to be aware of. I especially appreciate how Mrs. Kanzler conveys on what to expect in the Siberian's temperment. This book should be given to every new Siberian Husky puppy owner, and anyone considering this breed should read it! The price is definitely affordable. The author is a top breeder world-wide, and she certainly knows her subject.

Her famous wit, love of the animal, and her decades of experience shine through. She teaches you what to expect, how to relate effectively and how to care for and train puppies as they grow up. After comparing different books on this breed I found this one short and to the point. It is very informative.

Written by world reknown Top Breeder and expert in Siberians, a must for new owners. Insightful, simple solutions to commonly asked questions on raising and training this wonderful breed. Quite helpful in getting to know what's going on inside your Siberian's head. Looking forward to an advanced book on breeding.

Kathleen has hit the nail on the head with her new owner's guide to Siberian Huskies. An extremely well written book for the beginning owner to the seasoned veteran. I especially love her pictures and her views on Siberian history. The dog sledding pictures are my favorites as they depict the Siberian in their wintry habitat as a true working animal. This book is a must for every library for anyone who loves, owns or is owned by these breath-taking creatures. I've even had mine autographed! And if I know Kathleen the way I think I do, this won't be the last book either.

A New Owner's Guide to Siberian Huskies (JG Dog) by Kathleen Kanzler, is a very good read for anyone considering obtaining a Siberian Husky. The book goes into detail about many subjects, from the breed's rather heroic history to the standard and care of the breed today. Her knowledge as a breeder becomes very apparent as she details the best way to adjust to the Huskies' energetic tempo when dealing with matters such as training and even everyday lifestyle. The book is very generously illustrated from beginning to end, and these pictures show the Huskies in almost every type of activity that is mentioned.
There are faults within the book, however. While Kathleen Kanzler does a wonderful job of writing in detail about her breed, it becomes very clear that over half of the book is written about dogs in general when the words "Siberian Husky" all but disappear from the text, save for the captions in the picture (and even then, towards the end of the book the name of the breed disappears from those as well). Not only does the name of the breed disappear, but many of the things written about do not even apply to Huskies. For example, the book describes what Earthdog Events are, which apparently only apply to terriers (which the Husky is not). The effect of this generalization is distracting, and if you have read books on general dog care and dog activities, then you can easily skip half of this book. This latter part of the book is attributed to Judy Ilby, and is most likely a decision by the publisher (TFH) rather than Kanzler, which is unfortunate since she could probably have tailored most of the information in this part to apply to the Husky.
That is not to say that I did not enjoy this book, however. Anyone considering a Husky would do well to give it a read, as Kanzler is a very knowledgeable and reputable breeder whose Huskies have gone on to worldwide fame within the dog world. Her guidance is very useful. Hopefully, she will someday choose to write a more personal account of her experience as a person who has devoted her life to the Siberian Husky.
