4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not in depth enough.
It's a good book if you're interested in house training, etc. It gives you many practical tips and such, I feel it could have gone more in-depth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Getting Long in the Tooth
Regelman's book is good enough to add to a collection of shih tzu books but shouldn't be the only book purchased by a new owner. The photographs of the dogs are look good on the glossy pages, but many have a look that makes the book look dated. The vast majority of the photos are of shih tzu dogs sporting a show cut. Grooming instructions are also mostly for those who prefer keeping the hair of their shih tzu companion long.

I find the book a little imbalanced with too many pages devoted to grooming, showing, and breeding.

The author includes six pages on dental care, an important concern with the shih tzu considering its bite and pushed in snout. We learned the hard way not to give our shih tzu anything to chew on that's so hard it can't be bent. Our poor girl ended up with four broken teeth, and we ended up with a nice sized dental bill and an expensive lesson.

If you plan on showing your shih tzu, this book may come in handy. If you just want a companion trimmed with a puppy cut like ours, you definitely want to seek out additional shih tzu books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shih Tzu Book, January 25, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New Owners Guide to Shih Tzu (JG Dog) (Hardcover)
This book is written well, but it seems to me to be written more for "show" people. It contains much more info than the average "pet" owner would need or be interested in.

4.0 out of 5 stars A loving tribute to a wonderful breed of dogs., April 10, 2007
This review is from: New Owners Guide to Shih Tzu (JG Dog) (Hardcover)
JoAnne tells of the Shih Tzu with good humor and gentle guidance. She truly loved the dogs and it comes through on every page. Great for a first-time Shih Tzu owner, like me. I have referred to the book several times since our Bailey came home.
