4.0 out of 5 stars The Study Bible
Though the print is small, this bible is chock full of notes that give insight into much of formerly puzzling passages. Great for bible study classes.

3.0 out of 5 stars New Oxford Bible - College Edition
I have the previous edition of this bible and like it so well that I purchased the newer college edition for my granddaughter. It was a major disappointment to find that it did not include a concordance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Oxford's 'Apocrypha', August 4, 2010
This review is from: The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha: New Revised Standard Version, College Edition (Paperback)
I really appreciated the critical, contextual scholarship displayed in these translations. I also enjoyed Oxford's inclusive tendencies--they drew from more than the typical apocryphal 'canon' toward thinks like 2 Esdras and 4 Maccabees. Frankly, the format of this collection is very dull after reading something like NIV's Archaeological Study Bible. No pictures, only a few maps. Overall, this is a very excellent presentation of the Apocrypha.

This Bible was recommended to me for a class on the Old Testament. The Bible text is easy to read and the explanatory notes are extensive. I have owned other study Bibles, but this is the most complete edition I have ever used. The notes add information that sometimes goes beyond what we are presented in class. I would recommend this to any Bible student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Bible, September 30, 2011
By
This review is from: The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha: New Revised Standard Version, College Edition (Paperback)
The footnotes, introductions, and appendices in this study Bible make it an invaluable tool. The NRSV is a decent, scholarly -- if somewhat stodgy -- translation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for students of any background!, September 23, 2011

Recommended for a class regarding Judaism and Christianity in their Formative Period, I knew this Oxford classic would be good reading once it was recommended by my [Atheist] Professor from Princeton! Haha.

An excellent tool for any religious scholar, this tome (when not being used as a massive doorstop) includes everything a modern scholar could wish for: suggestions, charts and diagrams, essays, timelines, maps, numerous citations, etc. Loved the addition of the Apocrypha and the chapter/book introductions and extensive footnotes for clarification. Very helpful College Edition for students of any background!

The content and analysis of this Bible are great, particularly if you are planning to use it in a primarily academic setting. I bought this in order to facilitate two courses in Biblical Archaeology and Apocalypse Studies. This work more than does the trick, providing clear references at the bottom of each page as well as leading academic analysis of the particular chapter as the Book progresses. At the beginning of each book is a section allowing for analysis of authorship as well as historical context.

Without a doubt, buy this work if you are interested in an academic study of the Bible without archaic language. The only complaint I have is that the pages used are very flimsy, thus making it difficult to use this after a degree of wear. If you are rough with books, make sure you get the hardcover version to help fix this problem!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Understandable Disection of the Bible, May 15, 2010

This review is from: The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha: New Revised Standard Version, College Edition (Paperback)
As a 55 year old woman who got away from "religion" in my early 20's after spending junior high/high school searching for the "right" religion to no avail, I am now in 'seek' mode again. I've always believed in God but had many questions about the Bible and Christianity. While I now believe that there are many paths to God, I am still interested in learning - actually more interested - about the differences and more importantly the similarities. So, in that quest, this book was recommended to me by a former minister whose opinion I value deeply. And so far, I have to say that the definitions, origins and dispelling of some myths has been very helpful and eye opening to me. And I DEARLY love the print type and size as well as the soft cover version (some of my Christian friends actually think THIS is blasphemous! See why I'm confused? LOL) Very easy on the old eyes!

I teach an Ancient Civilizations course, and a significant part of the semester revolves around Ancient Hebrews and Early/Medieval Christianity. This footnotes in this book provide outstanding information, explaining the background and context of the different passages. This is a must-have for anyone teaching or learning about the Old and New Testament.
