The New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors is an essential A-Z guide for everyone who works with words. Drawing on the expertise and authority of Oxford dictionaries, it provides valuable advice on those words and names which raise questions time after time whether because of spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, cultural or historical context. In addition to lexical terms, there are many place names, personal names, institutional names, literary references, and books of the Bible included. Each entry gives full coverage of recommended spellings, variant forms, easily confused words, hyphenation, capitalization, foreign and specialist terms, proper names, and abbreviations.

The New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors has long been an indispensable part of any editor's reference shelf, now the text is even more useful than before. It is an essential tool for writers, editors, publishers, journalists, and web editors.

Review

`For anybody working on a newspaper or magazine which does not have its own style book, for any author, for any freelance writer, this should be the first book on the shelf. It will stop you making an ass of yourself.' John Jenkins, Writers' Forum

This review is from: New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors: The Essential A-Z Guide to the Written Word (Reference) (Hardcover)
Not an editorial guide, but an alphabetical usage guide of short entries, specifically British, with spellings and names, and the like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Small of a book..., November 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors: The Essential A-Z Guide to the Written Word (Reference) (Hardcover)
The book stands no more than 6inches in height and the binding is overly tight...I haven't decided whether I'm returning it or not yet--I'll use it for a few more days as I write my novel and make my decision then.
It was probably my fault for not having read the dimensions of the book in the first place...
I hope this review is helpful to you.

I have been using Collins Authors and Printers Dictionary sine the 70s. This latest New Oxford Dictionary is a 'must have' for anyone interested in the printed word on a professional level.
