5.0 out of 5 stars Don't put him on a pedestal!
I love this book and I love Chuck C.'s program, but remember; he is an alchoholic trying to save his own neck by sharing his experience ! Forutunately, he has a great program and wonderful insight, especially about business and getting what is "ours." I've bought this book several times, loaned it out again and again, sometimes losing it....but that is okay...

I don't know about you but he still sounds like a tongue chewing babbling idiot to me.

Thank you and good-night.

Forutunately, he has a great program and wonderful insight, especially about business and getting what is "ours." I've bought this book several times, loaned it out again and again, sometimes losing it....but that is okay. I'll keep buying it because it is one of those I can read over and over. Chuck C. did not write this book. It is just transcriptions from him speaking at meetings, so it reads that way. I tried listening to the tapes, but didn't like them as much. (I read fast, Chuck talks slow - but it was great just to hear him giggle.) A wonderful example of an alcholic whose experience helps many people, even after his passing! He is very inspiring and has a lot to pass on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing better than this, February 15, 2000

Chuck C. was one of the early leaders of AA in Southern California. He was one of the few people who came to AA fully surrendered to the will of God and then never took it back. Some of the things you will learn in this book will seriously change your life - most especially in your relations in the business world. There are spiritual truths here that transcend any of the more common and bland twelve step guides available. What is amazing is that it was not really planned as a book at all - it's a transcription of a series of talks Chuck made at a men's retreat. For that reason, it isn't highly polished or edited. Sincerely recommended for all who want to take their spiritual growth to the next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars as spiritually compelling as any experience written., November 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A New Pair of Glasses (Hardcover)
a compelling report and guide of a step-oriented spiritual life, by a man with world-wide influence during his lifetime upon those living a spiritual, and life-saving, existance. Far more potent than some supportive literature in various 12-step and other therapeutic supportive fields. Tens of thousands have achieved sobriety and some serenity as a result of this man's personal, direct, and indirect (the book) efforts. IT IS NOW BEING PUBLISHED AGAIN ON THE WEST COAST.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Teacher, November 23, 2001

Chuck's life was one that only comes around once in a great while. It's so hard for us to die to ourself on a day by day basis, but Chuck show's us how it works, and why it works in this amazing account. I have a copy of the tapes that this book was drawn from. The title on those tapes is "There Is a Solution." That's also the title of a chapter in the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" by Bill W. And today, I can't recall how many times I've said those words to others either at events, or in person, or online.

Whether it's recovery from alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, or any number of life's ups and downs, there is a solution. But I can't tell you what it is for you. I can only tell you what it is for me. I hope you'll get something from it. And that's how Chuck did it. All he does is share how it worked for him and thousands of others like him. "For fun and for free.... for God's kids who need to have something done for them." It's not a charity, it's a gift. A gift of love, given freely because it has been given freely to us.

I'm happy to be able to count myself one of Chuck's spiritual descendants. He is, along with all the other recovering alcoholic members of AA, my hero and my family.

Get this book today, and when you're done reading Chuck's story, read Bill's. It's contained in the second half of this book. God bless you.

I read this when I was about 6 months sober. Now at almost 11 years sober, its still my most favorite book. It made me smile, cry and most of all have hope that this sobriety thing really can work. Read it, you've got nothing to lose and a life to gain.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than a Book of Wisdom for Recovery, November 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A New Pair of Glasses (Hardcover)
I consider Chuck my great-grandsponsor because my sponsor in AA is sponsored by a man who was sponsored by Chuck C. I discovered this quite by accident when I picked up an interesting looking book at a 12-step shop and noticed that the man who wrote the intro - Clancy I. - had the same name as my sponsor's sponsor. Being a 3rd generation sponsee of Chuck C.'s hasn't had any "magical" influence on my life, but it does explain a lot of the things I'm taught by my sponsor. And when I read the book, it was as if I was listening to my sponsor, only with a bit more experience, strength, and hope. The lack of ego, the depth of spirituality, and the breadth of love demostrated by Chuck truly inspires me. If there was any one person whose recovery was an example of what I wanted and would go to any length to get, it was Chuck's. And Chuck would give it away for free and for fun, because we're all God's kids, and it's our job to help God's kids do what they need to have done. I'm blessed to have had many of Chuck's personal messages passed on to me as from father to son. But like the prodigal son, I would be happy to just be a servant in his house and gather the crumbs that were left over. Thank you, Chuck. I look forward to meeting you someday. - yumpinyiminee@hotmail.com

5.0 out of 5 stars We Truly Are Blessed by the One Source, November 21, 2001

[...] As Chuck says in this book, we are just God's kids and our job is to go around helping other God's kids do what they need to have done. The total lack of ego, desire to do God's will, and emptiness of self make Chuck the perfect author to answer many of today's problems.

This book was addressed to alcoholics, but today's society is plagued with addiction and self-seeking egomania. This seems to be the norm today, but there is a ground-swell of spiritual awakening that is described perfectly in A New Pair of Glasses. If you read this book from cover to cover and practice the principles described within its pages, your life will open up to a greater joy and peace than you have ever known.

I will always keep my own copy and several copies to pass on to those who will accept the message. And while the book is a transcription of tape-recordings of Chuck's talks, Chuck would be the first to tell you that the ideas presented here don't belong to him, but to everyone on this planet regardless of race, creed, nationality, religion, or any other category.

Chuck's greatest desire was to spread the news that we are all God's kids and as such we are heir to all the beauty that God (as you currently understand God) has to offer. I hope you are as blessed by my friend, Chuck's, words as I am every time I read them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift, June 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A New Pair of Glasses (Hardcover)
Sometimes in life something falls into your lap and it's timing could not have more poignant. I first heard the tapes from which the book is taken- recorded at Chuck's home during an AA retreat weekend . In the very early days of my recovery the tapes were used almost daily. Much I didn't get then and today I still don't get it all. This book is richer than any other I have read, rather like the Big Book it keeps on giving.

When you get life back into focus and see your reality and realise the blind spots via a series of revelations. This book helped me accelerate those in conjunction with the Steps, service and meetings etc.

This book ranks alongside The Road Less Travelled for its insight and practicality into helping us lead better lives. More specifically A new Pair of Glasses looks into the spiritual solution offered through the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's delivery is both wise and has just the right gravity balanced with humour to make it an essential bedside read for AA's.

How does a recovering Alcoholic accept work situations ?- Chuck C suggests from his experience how we practice these principles in all our affairs. A 12 Step call at work, at play, in AA its the same thing. This is only one small insight offered in a book of many.

Why this book is so significant to this reader, is that this man gives his wisdom (which came via learning in many cases through pain) away for free and for fun. When it takes a man 16 years sober to realize a mistake , he gives the reader the answer !

The man loves recovery, loves life (same thing !) and if you want to enjoy your life, help drunks, give love and of yourself away for free and for fun - enjoy the wisdom of A New Pair of Glasses and the freedom the book gives you back.

Most of the AA's whom I admire their sobriety, quote from this book. You may not agree with everything Chuck says but even so its one beautiful text...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rarely have we seen, December 6, 2005

Just a great story by one of the old guys. You know, at the risk of blaspheming, there are other programs out there. Not for me. But others may have had successes in the attempts to moderate and live with this disease. Bill Wilson and Bob Smith couldn't, thank God, and we are here today to listen to the founding people, and their experience, strength and hope.

AAers get criticized by those who feel it's too religious. Too cultish. That we're all automatons. Did you ever hear someone who has had consecutive years of sobriety say those things? "Well my whole life has changed, I have less but I have more. My wife trusts me. I haven't missed a day of work in thirteen years. My daughters-in-law let me take my grand kids out for the day. But the AA Program is just too damn cultish!"

"We think not."

Great stuff by an old guy. These are transcriptions of conversations so they're not necessarily seamless. But all in all, great life-saving stuff. 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury
