Biography

Prince Rogers Nelson was one of the most critically and commercially successful solo musicians of the 20th Century, thanks to his impressive technical proficiency and a spell of outrageous creativity in the 1980s. In a career spanning almost 30 years, he has released almost 30 studio or soundtrack albums, all of which were entirely written, arranged, performed and produced by Prince himself. 5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful song and EP lost in the shadows of more popular works, September 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New Power Generation / Tc's Rap / Brother With a P (Audio CD)
I admit I didn't care for the song when it was featured on the actual film; it seemed to me to be presented more as a theme, or an idea, rather than a standalone piece, and the edits of said tune on the soundtrack didn't do much to deter my feelings.

The 'Funky Weapon Remix' (first track/main track), however is a powerful song that much better gives the feeling for which Prince was aiming in the beginning. The song takes me back into what he'd been doing with Purple Rain, which makes sense I suppose, but this song and the movie itself are much more 'mentally aware' than Purple Rain.

The 4 remixes are all great, taking the foundation of the original into new ideas and adopting to new sounds, and adapting to new feelings. 2 mixes include lengthy raps by a couple of Prince's posse, which actually works really well with the percussion (the main source of remixes). It's obvioius to me that in the studio time that it took to record this EP he had a good vision.

The 'b-side' here, 'Loveleft, Loveright' is a great track; another reviewer called it an 'average Prince b-side', with which I respectfully disagree. The mixing and instrumentation is right on with the image he provokes; it's perfect in my mind, probably one of my favorite single-exclusive Prince tracks.

During this period of Prince's music the whole wax and wane of what's in and out in the musical world was probably going crazy with the birth of the new decade (weird how that works) so I feel like his music is in a vulnerable state. I do however feel he did the best thing for himself, his fans, and his music by keeping things the way he wants them, and this single is testament to his mighty influence.

Personally I feel the only reason this soundtrack/film/song/image was lost in the Prince library was that it couldn't stand up well to the movie of Purple Rain (though I feel Graffiti Bridge is far superior to it) and it couldn't obviously live up to the expectations that the soundtracks of Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon provided for future Prince releases. Again though, this is my favorite of the three.

(for more of my input on the movie please see my review of the DVD located on Amazon.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Making love and music's the only things worth fighting for., June 9, 2006
By
This review is from: New Power Generation / Tc's Rap / Brother With a P (Audio CD)
This is the CD single of Prince's song "New Power Generation". It was not a hit, reaching only #64 on the Hot 100. But it is still a pretty good song, although not one of Prince's best. There are four remixes of the song here, which all sound quite different from each other. Note that "Get Off" is a remix of "New Power Generation", and is not the later hit song "Gett Off". "Loveleft, Loveright" is the last song on the CD, and it's just an average Prince "b-side".
