4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Guide To a Complicated Subject, August 22, 2001
This review is from: The New Practical Guide to Kashruth (Hardcover)
As someone who keeps kosher, I thought I knew a lot about this subject. Rabbi Wagschal shows how broad a field of study kashruth is while making all the aspects easy to understand.

He begins the book with a general overview of the principles of kosher foods, then gradually moves into more and more details about the particular area of kashruth he is discussing. In this way, you are free to stop reading as soon as you've gleaned enough information about a specific part of the kosher rules without having to read a lot of other things you may not be interested in.

Of particular value is the comprehensive list of the blessings to be recited before eating various foods, contained in an easy-to-use table at the back of his book. I found the list of regulations concerning the details of food preparation most helpful, as well.

The only part of the book that gave me pause was the extensive footnoting in Hebrew. Those who are not already familiar with kashruth principles may not be fluent in Hebrew either. This was the reason I only gave the book four stars. The use of English footnotes would have earned five stars for this excellent book.
