1.0 out of 5 stars It reads like a thinly-veiled infomercial.
This book seems more like an info-mercial for a licensed drug protocol than a researched-based factual presentation.

This is one of the best books out there on the biology and science of addiction. It explains what is happening in the brain and how new treatments like buprenorphine work. Anyone in treatment now or has a loved one in treatment should read it so you are armed with up-to-date facts and not myth about addiction.

It clearly explains why addiction is considered a disease, and what can be done about it. I particularly liked the explanation of why even once people stop taking their drug-of-choice, they often relapse months later. This book clears up years of misunderstanding and misconceptions about addiction.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand why addiction is so hard to beat for them or a loved one, and learn about the new treatments.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read of anyone dealing with addiction, July 7, 2007
This review is from: A New Prescription for Addiction: A Comprehensive Treatment Plan (Paperback)
With this book Dr. Gracer brings the treatment of addiction to the 21st century. The book presents a comprehensive look at addiction, its scope, biology, diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Gracer's approach is expansive and covers all aspects of the addiction problem. New treatments that integrate social, psychological, medical and "alternative" methods are presented in a non judgmental way so that all types of sufferers can benefit. The book addresses many types of addictions from medically prescribed drugs to street drugs. Therapies that address brain imbalances caused by, or that lead to, the use of drugs are clearly and accessibly presented with many real life examples. This book is a must for anyone suffering or involved with addiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone dealing with or know someone that is dealing with an addiction, July 11, 2007

This is a page turner for anyone that has or thinks they have an addiction problem, has a close family member or friend that has an addiction problem, wants to know the truth about addiction and how to get help. You don't have to go to a clinic or 12 step meeting to kick the addiction. Private & caring help is just a book away.

I didn't put the book down until I finished it. The book is informative and easy to read (not full of complicated medical terms). It gives hope to those that think they have tried everything to kick "the habit". It helps understand addiction and explains that it's a disease (and often times inherited) and not a condition.

You may find yourself relating to a patient's story.
You may find a patient's story relates to a family member or friend.

If you have an addicted Mother, Father, other Family Member or a friend or a co-worker...share this book. Dr. Gracer and his staff have helped hundreds and after this book, will help so many more people that were afraid to come forward because of shame or embarrassment.

I truly can't say enough about the book or Dr. Gracer & his Exemplery Staff! Help yourself or help someone else...read the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now It Makes Sense!, August 7, 2007
Dr. Gracer clearly explains how addiction happens and why it is a medical condition that REQUIRES medical treament. Written in laymen's terms, it is easy reading and the diagrams and analogies are a great help! If you know someone suffering from addiction, the best way to help might BEGIN with reading this book and SHARING it with that person, as well as family members, friends, and physicians.

The Scientific Method has alluded the author. Without it, the "Gracer Method" is no different than snake oil.

1.0 out of 5 stars Trading One Addiction for another, November 22, 2011
This review is from: A New Prescription for Addiction: A Comprehensive Treatment Plan (Paperback)
Dr. Gracer and the mass of many other doctor's are simply trading street addictions of opiates/heroin/pain killers in for medications that the drug companies and doctor's can make money off of. Lot's of money, I may add. As many insurance companies do not cover this drug, and it runs about $8/pill and they are sometimes prescribing 2-4 pills a day. That is between $240-$1000 per month! About as much as a drug addiction habit. These treatments are STILL addictive and still opiates!! Instead of having a drug dealer, your doctor is now your dealer. These doctor's fail to inform their patients that you if/when you try and get off the "helpful" and "life changing" Buprenorphine drugs such as Suboxone and Subutex, you will experience a detox and painful withdrawal symptoms LONGER and much more INTENSE than the original drug of choice. Because Suboxone/Subutex have a longer half life, and are MUCH stronger than pain killers such as heroin and Vicodin, when you try and cut the cord off this addicting drug, you are in for one long and arduous ride. Not to mention the terrible side effects of these drugs. People call it a "Miracle Drug" when they first are educated slightly about it, and once they are ready to get off, they realize the trap that they are in. You do not treat drug addiction with another similar drug- the whole point is to get off. Anyhow, I just want people who are researching this to be aware and do your thorough research on both sides. Drug addiction has ruined many lives, but so has this replacement drug. The longer you are on this drug, the harder and stronger your detox. We are talking months of struggles. This medicine was supposed to help with detox symptoms and used only up to 7 days, and now they are prescribing it for lifetimes. Find a doctor out there who really cares and will be honest about these drugs.

This book is very informative and forward thinking. It goes beyond the 12 Step Program which is not effective for most people. Once you read the book, I suggest you contact Dr Gracer in San Ramon for a personal interview. Prometa has been a gift to our family.
