Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Revising his 1985 edition, Trelease preaches the reading gospel with undiminished fervor. Updated evidence from scholarly and journalistic sources (50 percent post-1985) bolsters his case for reading aloud from infancy through adolescence. Trelease addresses parents, but directs considerable homiletic energy toward librarians, pediatricians, clergy, and above all, schools: a new chapter cites individual, state, and district "success stories." There is a new list of "predictable" (i.e., cumulative or repetitive) books, and over 70 synopses are of books published 1985-89. Most choices are excellent. Wider in scope than parent guides like Eden R. Lipson's Parent's Guide to the Best Books for Children ( Times Bks., 1988), Michele Landsberg's Reading for the Love of It (LJ 11/15/87), or Betsy Hearne's Choosing Books for Children (LJ 5/1/81), Trelease's book covers a broader age range and is easier to use than Masha Rudman and Anna M. Pierce's For Love of Reading (Consumer Reports Bks., 1988). His enthusiasm is infectious, and his "related readings" suggestions are invaluable (and unique).

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Book to teach parents reading is important., February 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Read-aloud Handbook (Mass Market Paperback)
I had to read this book for a children's literature course and I was floored by all of the information that Jim Trelease gave about how important reading is for young children. Not only did he support all of his ideas with fact but the book was easy to understand. I think that this book is very informative for people who do not know which books to choose to read to their children. Futhermore this book gives the do's and don't lists about reading to young children as well as older children. It also tells of how books should be read outloud to children and adolescents all though school. This includes highschool classes. This book is amazing and I was very impressed by it and I hope that Jim Trelease continues to write and publish lists of books that are good reads for children.

Reading aloud to children is one of the best gifts a parent can give a child. The benefits are immediate, and can also last a lifetime

Sorry, but I found this book rather flat. The author's thesis is rather obvious, and while it has some value as a source of enthusiasm/inspiration, it's not particularly insightful. Save your money and buy some books to read to your kid.
