I still refer to my original settlement cookbook. I don't like the way the new book is organized. I don't feel as if it is a quick reference guide which I was hoping because that is how I use my first version. Menus aren't simple and don't help me as a working mom.

I bet the original is interesting and maybe fun to cook from. The revised edition tries to celebrate the history of the original while providing practical updates, but the result is an unsatisfying compromise that is a little like the overcooked vegetables it suggests you make -- bland, flavorless and not all that practical. Did I overextend that simile? Whatever, if you like your food history spliced with depressing 90s-era diet tips and microwave cookery, buy this book. Otherwise, uh, don't.

This is a fabulous cookbook! I have made many of the recipes and they always come out as they are supposed to come out. Very yummy, and what I like best is that it goes way back and has ties to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the United States. (Although it is not a kosher book).

The first dinner that I made for my husband-to-be was from this book. At the time I had three kids already and bills up the yin-yang. The dinner was delicious. It's been eighteen months and now we have 1.5 MORE kids and still alot of bills and he still raves about my cooking!

if you have to buy only 3 cookbooks this should be one of them. Need I say More. My own copy fell apart (1945 edition) was passed down to my. Now I want a replacement.

I originally borrowed this cookbook from the library and almost didn't want to give it back. I bought the book and it is truly my favorite cookbook by far.

My grandmother used this book for years. When my mom married my dad, my grandmother gave my mom a copy. When I got married, my mom gave me a copy. When my stepdaughter got married, I gave her a copy. This is a must have cookbook. It has all the basics from how to set a table to how to cook any cut of meat. Don't miss the desserts!

When I was a child growing up my mother had this cookbook. It still has the best Waffle recipe in the world. MY mother would make the waffles every Sunday.
This is not the same as her old book (fell apart from use) it is a new revamped version, with a lot of the original recipes but made for the modern kitchen appliances I went looking for this book and did by it at Amazon.
If you want a easy to use cookbook this is the one to get.The New Settlement Cookbook

The contents of the cookbook are as usual (I've had three copies in the past, I just wear them out) this time though, the paper is dreadful, very poor quality. Why on earth should that be?

With all the hype ,with all the titles of cookbooks now this one has everything. No glodssy pictures just really good recipes and plain explanations .. What a pleasure.
