Editorial Reviews

New Slaves is a true behemoth epic, unapologetic, painfully and artfully composed, mind-boggling in complexity, original in sound and intent, while maintaining a minimalist, chugging funk groove throughout its precise post-capitalist haze. It is arguably the most definitive statement from a band that have been challenging listeners for a decade, demonstrating, over the course of 70 minutes, just how versatile their sound can be.

This is not music that comes to you. You have to be hungry for it. It is very challenging, very abrasive, the kind of stuff to scare your mother-in-law or impress that annoying music know-it-all (who, unfortunately, probably already knows of this album and either loves it or hates it or hates to love it or loves to hate it).

Once you get past all that, and truly listen to this album, and only on a good system with good speakers or headphones, the sonic textures can be quite satisfying - in a disturbing, unsettling way. I only wish the album was not SO relentless. There are very few moments of peace; Masonry, for example, provides some respite from the assault before the album plunges into its overlong and unsettling jazzed-up gut-wrenching title track.

If you are craving some challenging avant-garde music that fuses jazz, rock and electronica, this may be your record. Be careful though, you can get a headache.

Holy dingus! It's ZS! The band has gone through many shifts in its line-up. New Slaves represents this ensemble in full force. Each member contributes their own zones. "Acres of Skin" is my favorite. If you are into post-Zorn skronkular noise-rock dreams, then hop into this zone as quickly as possible!
