5.0 out of 5 stars No need for a "skip" button here.
Steve Tyrell's blend of mild jazz classics is sure to please. My wife gave it to me for Christmas, and there isn't a single song I skipped. This is the kind of disk you put on and press the repeat button, then sit back and enjoy. No loud, annoying, experimental or elevator jazz sound here, just pure entertainment from a singer whose grasp of style and appreciation for...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ear Candy Without Soul
Steve Tyrell's "A New Standard" came to my CD player with a lot of promise, and I must admit that it is a beautifully recorded album. Lush, close-miked sound and fine musicianship that reminded this listener of the Dave Grusin records. And Steve Tyrell has a rough, pleasing texture to his voice. Still, I had a heck of a time keeping engaged while I listened to...

Steve Tyrell's blend of mild jazz classics is sure to please. My wife gave it to me for Christmas, and there isn't a single song I skipped. This is the kind of disk you put on and press the repeat button, then sit back and enjoy. No loud, annoying, experimental or elevator jazz sound here, just pure entertainment from a singer whose grasp of style and appreciation for a certain familiarity is refreshing. Tyrell doesn't distance himself from the classics, but rather wraps himself in them and clearly enjoys what he is doing. Another thing, the orshestration is superb. This is not one of the disks you put on and wait for the dreaded shrill. You won't find it here. I strongly recommend it for those people like me who throw out far too many disks that promise more than they deliver. Steve Tyrell's "A new Standard" is mild jazz, as it was meant to be: solid, confident and soulfull. A great buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A music fan from Cleveland, December 15, 1999

Sometimes you luck out on an impluse buy. I saw the play list , heard a couple of cuts and bought the CD. Two days, eight plays later I am still in awe. There are not enough "O's" in smooth to describe the sound, from voice to arrangements, to playing, it doesn't get any better. So Steve, when is your next CD coming out?

5.0 out of 5 stars Where have you been, Steve Tyrell?, March 25, 2000

At long last! An artist that understands and loves classic standards! I have only had this CD for a few days, but feel that I have had it for years! Steve Tyrell is amazing-he seems to be relaxed and passionate about this music all at the same time. I grew up with a musician for a father, and my Dad would have loved this music! All I can say is, don't keep us waiting too long for a follow-up! Such arrangements combined with absolutely wonderful phrasing and total love and understanding of the music is rare in this day and age of machine driven music, and annoying ear candy. Bring on the sequel, Steve!

Steve Tyrell brings just the right tone to these great old songs, both in the arrangements and the way he sings them. Each song is a joy to listen to! Great for romance! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes! A CD for us yung'uns who love the old standards!, September 10, 2000

Okay, I'm 31, not quite a yung'un, but I heard this playing at Barnes and Noble, and asked in the music department who it was. He told me "Steve Tyrell," but apologized that they were all sold out! I finally found it, but almost everywhere it had been snatched up by music lovers looking for real crooning. Believe me, as soon as you hear any song from this album, you'll have to have it too! A fantastic achievement, and my instant favorite album. Thank you, Mr. Tyrell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyrell sets a high standard!, February 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A New Standard (Audio CD)
I can't say that I spend a lot of time listening to the "classic" songs from the pre-rock era, but "A New Standard" is a great POP album that manages to sound totally authentic and current at the same time. It is without a doubt THE BEST re-recording of American standards since Willie Nelson's STARDUST. Tyrell swings, croons and warbles over the course of seventeen generous tracks. There's not a dud in the bunch, so you can't help but have as much fun as Tyrell and the excellent musicians who play on the CD. You'll quickly forget about all of those boring remakes that we've been subjected to over the last few years because this guy gets it right. Steve Tyrell is the real deal!

5.0 out of 5 stars hearing Steve Tyrell for the first time, June 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A New Standard (Audio CD)
The first time I heard this CD, it was playing loudly over a department store's music system. Everyone was stopping to listen. Finally, I inquired about the name of the singer and heard for the first time, the words "Steve Tyrell". I thought that with the death of Sinatra, I'd never hear standards sung in an acceptable manner again. But Tyrell proved thsoe fears to be groundless. The orchestrations are as fresh as those we used to associate with Nelson Riddle, and the sound recording techniques used on this album are absolutely first rate. There are so many outstanding performances that it is hard to pick out one to recommend over another. However, my personal favorites are "Give Me the Simple Life" and "Kiss To Build a Dream On". Tyrell's voice combines the qualities of Ray Charles and Tony Bennett, but once you get into the album, you can't help thinking about Sinatra, his phrasing, his understanding of the lyrics and the way he could take over a song and make it his own. Steve Tyrell is the real deal. Take my word for it and buy this CD as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Find, November 23, 1999
By A Customer

Combine Tony Bennett, Jack Teegarden, Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Bobby Caldwell and a lot of originality and you have this amazing new artist. Why this remarkable album has gone so unheralded I can't figure; I had it pointed out to me on a visit to an Atlanta music shop. Haven't even SEEN it in Chicago. Great songs, terrific arrangements, amazing side musicians and here is this totally remarkable singer in this totally remarkable album. Don't miss it!

Thank goodness Steve decided to come out from the dark. For years, I have admired the Father of the Bride music but never knew the musicians. Pure serendipity led me to Steve Tyrell and now I will never stray. His is the most unique sound I have heard in many years. Is he available for parties?

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great album, January 31, 2000

If you're feeling down, Steve Tyrell's album will put you in a good mood. If you're in a good mood, the album will make you feel even better. Tyrell's warm, soulful voice is so good that you'd think he's black. His song selections are A-plus and so is his production and arrangements. His choice of jazz musicians, some of whom played on the original recordings of these classic songs, adds authenticity and artistry to the CD. Each song has a contemporary sound, but still pays homage to the artists who recorded them in the '30's & '40's. Your friends will thank you for turning them onto this album, as mine have with me. Tyrell's album is one of the real finds of the year.
