New Ways to Play and Share Your Mario Fun

New Super Mario Bros. U is a new, side-scrolling adventure featuring Mario, Luigi, Toad ... and your Mii character. Now's your chance to step inside the Mushroom Kingdom and explore new worlds, new power-ups and new ways to play. Up to five players* can jump into the fun, with up to four people using Wii Remote controllers and one on the Wii U GamePad. The experience is different, depending on which controller is used.

Key Game Features

  • The Wii U GamePad controller offers a new way to experience multiplayer Mario fun. Create Boost Blocks out of thin air to help players navigate tricky stages or access hidden or hard-to-reach items, and distract onscreen enemies, all with the tap of their finger or stylus.
  • Swoop through levels and cling to walls when Mario transforms into Flying Squirrel Mario, or gently float through the air while hanging onto Balloon Baby Yoshi.
  • In addition to the main Story Mode, in which players must rescue Princess Peach, New Super Mario Bros. U features more exciting game modes, including:
    • Boost Rush - Using Boost Mode, two to five players work together to clear many different courses in the fastest time possible. The scene auto scrolls, forcing you to move ahead through the course. As you collect more coins, the scene scrolls faster. Once you've completed your run, you can watch a replay of other players' Boost Rush to help strategize for your next attempt.
    • Challenge Mode - Numerous single-player and multiplayer challenges incorporate a series of familiar Super Mario gameplay concepts in a fun, competitive way. These challenges offer high replay value as players try to achieve the best score and unlock new challenges. Boost Mode Challenges help players practice the teamwork necessary for effective Boost Mode gameplay. After finishing, players can watch a replay of their Challenge to strategize for next time.
  • Boost Mode also makes cooperative speed runs possible for the first time. Use the GamePad to interact with and manipulate enemies and objects in real time, and discover new ways to find the fastest route through each stage.
  • Play on the big screen or the small screen. Switch single-player gameplay from the TV to the GamePad at any time to continue playing even when others are using the TV.
  • Families and friends can experience Mario together like never before with Miiverse. See other players' comments and accomplishments while you play, and leave your own feedback for others to see when connected to the Nintendo Network (broadband Internet access required).

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like Christmas back in 1991 November 26, 2012
By B. Batt
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
During Christmas Eve back in 1991, I stayed the night over at my best friend's house in anticipation of playing his Super Nintendo. We both woke up at about 2 in the morning & found it laying helplessly under the tree. Like most kids, we took off just a corner of the wrapping paper to confirm our suspicions and then waited for his mom to wake up. I'll never forget that Christmas Day as it was the first time I had played Super Mario World. Flash forward 20+ years and we now have New Super Mario Bros for Wii U. It's the first game that has made me feel like it was Christmas every time that I play it. I've played every Halo game...every PS3 blockbuster...every definitive Wii title and there's nothing that compares to the fun and excitement that New Super Marios Bros for Wii U brings me. In fact, I brought the Wii U home for Thanksgiving this year and every person that played it (whether a 30 year old adult or a 7 year old little girl) had a smile from ear to ear. This game is not only for classic Mario lovers, but for a whole new generation of would-be plumbers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah the Memories, Such an Amazing Game December 5, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
New Super Mario Bros U makes the Wii U worth the buy alone. I think it's a fun, amazing game that anyone any age can appreciate.

The game I played most when I was a kid was Super Mario 3 for the Nintendo. This game more than lives up to the name. It seems like it takes all the best things from every single Mario game and combines them into a masterpiece. Countless times you will find yourself smiling remembering something from your past. Finding secret areas, using all the power-ups, fighting stuff on the map, dungeons, and bosses are just so much fun. Time comes into play as well, it makes you try to move fast and explore, all while trying to beat the clock. There are tons of hidden areas and each level has 3 star coins. The Miiverse plays a role here too where you can leave comments on levels to help each other out or just say that you are happy you beat the level. For single player the Wii U tablet remote doesn't serve as a real purpose other than mirroring the screen, if you want you can play solely on that and let someone else use the TV.

The multiplayer is crazy and exciting. Some people would complain about other players on the screen because they run into you and mess you up but I find it to be more fun. You have to not only watch yourself but watch your teammates and work with them to get past obstacles. It's worth noting that you need a Wii remote for each character playing. For instance 1 Wii remote + 1 Wii tablet = only 1 person on screen while the tablet player has a different function. For 2 player you need 2 Wii remotes. This game can be played by 5 people, 4 players on the screen using Wii remotes and 1 person using the Wii tablet. My friend and I have never had a dull moment and have had to stop for a minute because we were laughing so hard. Playing with friends adds to the complexity and makes you work together to accomplish getting to secret areas.

Mario looks amazing in HD and this game is a must have for any Nintendo fan.

Update Feb 2013: Nintendo announced that there will be upcoming New Super Luigi Bros. U DLC coming for this game. Which seems like it will redo every map with a Luigi twist to it. Also I realized I didn't add that the Wii U Pro controller will NOT work with this game either, so you are stuck with Wii Remotes.

Update May 2013: Super Luigi U DLC officially announced as a $20 download on June 20th. My friend and I are still trying hard to get all the star coins. The bonus star world has some extremely fun levels.

No new wii u games on amazon?
There are several games coming (despite what the DOOMsayers think). Amazon might not have a portal for the system yet because it is a fairly new system and the website refuses to sell Wii U units right now. Forum members can get you recommendations here or in the Videogame forums (VGF). What... Read more

Level times and difficulty
I noticed that this game is more single-player friendly than the Wii edition, yet at the same time feels more balanced than that iteration.
