David Cartwright,

This review is from: The New Testament: Its Background and Message (Paperback)
This book is an excellent overview of the New Testament. Especially well treated is the background leading up to 1st century Judea in culture, geography, and political standings. Done in easy to understand language.
Some terms need clarification and refinement, but that would make the book over 1000 pages...

I brought this book for a seminary class but after I read it I had to buy a few more as gifts to other ministers. Lea & Black not only revealed some good background information for biblical students but provided information which I often use to help me in my sermons and personal studies. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feel the need to look behind the scriptures.

Black's revision of Thomas D. Lea's classic introduction to the New Testament was one of two books that was required reading for an online course that I took at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. The New Testament: Its Background and Message covers different types of literature found in the New Testament and their cultural, historical, political, and religious backgrounds. Although the book is designed for seminarians, I would recommend it to any layperson who wants a systematic introduction of the New Testament. It should be noted that both of the authors come from Baptist backgrounds.

I've used this book for two seminary courses and found it to be an excellent reference tool. Not for the deep theological debates or studies necessarily, but an easy to read reference tool for the average person who wants to know more background about the New Testament. The book is well organized which has been helpful on our open book quizes! Would recommend for any library.

This book is a great expository tool for anyone wanting to learn more about the New Testament. It provides history, background, maps, and good information behind the authorship of every book of the New Testament. I would recommend it for any seminarian or lay person just interested in learning more about God's word.

I was impressed with the detail and easy reading of the book. It was required as a college course and I learned many things that a great deal of friends and I had never heard of.

I teach a certificate class offered by the college at New Orleans Baptist Theological Semiary here in southwest Florida. This introduction is readable enough for a certificate class and in depth enough for a bachelor's level class. There is an option for those non nerds that can't tackle Guthrie's intro.
