Book Description

September 7, 1995
The New Testament and Psalms is a new version of the Bible that speaks more directly than ever before to today's social concerns, especially the move towards universal inclusivity. This revolutionary new version pushes the English language to new levels of inclusive expression. The noted scholars who produced this work address issues of gender, race and ethnicity more directly than ever before. The resulting version is one that can truly be said to speak to all people.
The language of everyday life is already changing to reflect a more inclusive, less pejorative view: "spokespersons" and "the disabled" have replaced "spokesmen" and "the handicapped." Even Star Trek now "boldly goes where no one has gone before." In recent years Bible translators have recognized the limits of the language used in many older versions and have produced new versions that begin to use language that emphasizes a universal community rather than a particular gender or other favored group. But none have gone as far as The New Testament and Psalms to make this vision a reality. In this version biblical language concerning people with physical afflictions has been revised to avoid personifying individuals by their disabilities; language referring to men and women has been corrected to reflect this inclusiveness precisely; dark and light imagery has been revised to avoid equating "dark" as a term for persons of color with "dark" as a metaphor for evil; references to Judaism have been corrected to avoid imprecise allusions in relation to Christ's crucifixion; God language has been improved to reflect more precisely a universal concept of God and Jesus Christ.
The New Testament and Psalms reflects the newest scholarly work on the most reliable biblical manuscripts available. The principles applied by the editors are consistent with the accepted requirements applied to all respected English language versions of the Bible: close reference to the original language texts and current scholarly material, and a consistent scholarly orientation throughout the work. The editors involved with this project have applied these principles to produce a new rendering of the New Testament and Psalms that brings out the underlying meaning of the text more explicitly than ever before: its truths do not exclude anyone, the comfort and strength gained from it should be accessible to everyone--a truly universal world view.
* A revolutionary new version of the Bible to serve today's world.
* "A project of...utmost significance"--Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza * "This Bible breaks new ground...Inclusive...finally means everyone."--James H. Cone * "Should be read as an important step in the search for a new inclusive idiom."--Bishop Krister Stendahl * Prepared by a group of noted biblical scholars and theologians.
* Reflects current social trends and their effect on one of the most important documents of Western culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why get so upset and defensive?, January 19, 2005
This review is from: The New Testament and Psalms: An Inclusive Version (Hardcover)
This translation is complied by accomplished scholars, and serves a needed purpose. If you don't like it, don't read it! I enjoy this translation, and find it helpful in my devotional life.

The great thing is that we CAN read what we want to read, and we CAN ask the questions we want to ask, and we CAN question established authority, even religious authority. I firmly believe that God can handle it, and it is our right as Americans. This is is a point the other reviewers seem to miss.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest sins against literature in history, October 17, 2004
This review is from: The New Testament and Psalms: An Inclusive Version (Hardcover)
During the Qin Dynasty in Ancient China the first emperor, Qin Shihuangdi burned thousands of books and buried their authors alive, destroying an unknown amount of Chinese classical literature. This "Bible" is written with the same mentality but with nicer wrapping.

The Bible is not only a religious book but an essential book to understanding western literature; the Bible is argueably the most influential book in western history. Changing it would be a huge step toward a world like the one describe in Ray Bradberry's Farenheit 451 (people are only allowed to have books approved by the government--one justification is certain books promote racial tension).

Racism is a problem in our society but this isn't the solution. Butchering an important piece of classical literature and for many people, spiratual belief will not make anything better.

Don't buy this book. Buy "Today's English Version", "King James Version", "New Revised Standard Version", any other version. Just not this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars THE POLITICALLY CORRECT BIBLE! Spare Me!, August 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The New Testament and Psalms: An Inclusive Version (Hardcover)
One of the most politically incorrect books evr goes P.C.! They have taken the Bible and taken out all words that might be considered sexist, racist, homophobic, bigoted. And made this ancient text which has passed down through the ages, influenced the lives of millions (for good and much bad) and made it all safe, clean, politically correct and non-offensive to all those easily offended gender, racial, and out of the ordinary sexual groups!

Oh my! Heaven forbid the Bible should offend someone! PLEASE!!! I'm an agnostic, I think it would be great if there was a higher power, but I'm smart enough to know all religion is bunk. Religion has caused more suffering than the movies of Adam Sandler!

And now they try and rewrite it and make it all very politically correct. The right wing has done this for years in some regards, now it's time for the left to do the same. This is a dumber book than Kevin Smith's movie Dogma. I remember Kevin's dialogue from Selma Hayek saying the Bible was "gender biased". I wanted to throw up when I heard that pukey P.C. 90's talk. Yeah, it is gender biased. If you don't like it, don't believe in the Bible! Just don't try to make a thousand plus year old book all safe and P.C. so it can fit into your idiotic politically correct liberal way of thinking. You have to take the Bible as it is written or not at all.

If you don't you are just deluding yourself. Being gay was a big no-no when the Bible was written. Not in ancient Rome, but in a lot places it was. And being a woman made you a second class citizen. I don't think either holds up today. But it did then. The Bible is hopelessly outdated by today's standards. So don't try and make it P.C. for the idiot Kevin Smith crowd.

Now the Bible is politically correct! Maybe the end is near like the prophets say. Thank God the politically correct 1990's are over.

This book is SO 90's! SO P.C.! And so utterly dated already!
