Book Description

New Theory of the Earth is an interdisciplinary advanced textbook on the origin, composition, and evolution of the Earth's interior: geophysics, geochemistry, dynamics, convection, mineralogy, volcanism, energetics and thermal history. This is the only book on the whole landscape of deep Earth processes which ties together all the strands of the subdisciplines. It is a complete update of Anderson's Theory of the Earth (1989). It includes many new sections and dozens of new figures and tables. As with the original book, this new edition will prove to be a stimulating textbook on advanced courses in geophysics, geochemistry, and planetary science, and supplementary textbook on a wide range of other advanced Earth science courses. It will also be an essential reference and resource for all researchers in the solid Earth sciences.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book will serve as a great resource since it is jam-packed with tables, graphs, and figures covering every imaginable aspect of modern geological analysis. For a complex and ambitious undertaking, it is remarkably readable. ...Highly recommended." - CHOICE

"It is principally the task of every geoscientist to highlight such enigmas and paradoxes through questioning and criticism, but few have the overview, the facilities, the time and the willingness to do so. Don Anderson is among those rare geoscientists who have wisdom and capability of in-depth criticism, as is evident from this book ... In addition to conventional (highly relevant and up-to-date) references, the added 'googlets' will be of immense help for students and researchers to find many relevant but otherwise inaccessible web documents. The mode of presentation is enjoyable and the illustrations are reader-friendly. This book will definitely motivate new research and I strongly recommend this book for libraries of universities. Last but not the least, I must congratulate Cambridge University Press for publishing such a good book." - Rajat Mazumder, Geologos

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful overview of earth's internal processes, September 3, 2009

This review is from: New Theory of the Earth (Hardcover)
I used this as a textbook for a "volcanic plumbing" course in grad school, where one of our objectives was to learn about magma formation. The book starts off with how the earth was formed chemically, moving on to characteristics of material movement and behavior in the mantle, with some thoughts on the core. The strengths lie in providing petrological and geophysical data to explaining interior processes, as well as giving space for competing hypothesis. One weakness are some of the references to internet searches or "googlets", which work, with mixed results. However, references are easily accessible in the back of the book, complete with further reading suggestions and some explanation of more complex or controversial subjects. Recommended as an introduction to earth's internal processes for undergraduates and graduate students with prior coursework in geophysics and petrology.
