This review is from: New Tricks (Audio CD)
On the liner notes for the Bonzo Dog Band's 40th Anniversary DVD (2006) we are proudly advised that the DVD project had nothing whatsoever to do with EMI - and neither does this CD, thank god. The EMI CD's all had lack lustre mastering, whereas all of the digitally remastered tracks on "New Tricks" sound vastly superior - these detailed songs deserve such reverent treatment.
It's worth owning even if only for the perfect and rather rare stereo versions of "I'm The Urban Spaceman" (without the intro fade out of Monster Mash) and "Canyons Of Your Mind" (with the spoken dubs between the intro pauses). My only beef was with the cut down version of "Rusty" - which fades out 2 minutes short of the original, and makes the song sound silly rather than just unusual. Ending with "Rhinocratic Oaths" is appropriate - it's not only just about their best radically different song, but it also has a sudden death ending (which leaves you longing for more). Whether as an introduction to the Bonzo Dog Band or in order to complete a collection, "New Tricks" is to be highly recommended. |
