Gr 1-3--Several species of birds have been categorized by their habitats or their abilities to adapt to their environments in these three offerings. All have good-quality full-color photos. Chapters in Desert Birds are devoted to species that live in subtropical, cool-coastal, cold-winter, and polar desert regions. Night Birds makes readers aware of the many more nocturnal species besides owls. Explanations of concepts such as echolocation and biological clock make the mysteries of these night creatures less puzzling. Fifteen types of Seabirds are listed with a world map indicating the bodies of water where they exist. Flanagan describes the birds' uniqueness, colonies, migration, navigation, and amazing accomplishments. A bit larger selection of species can be found in Paul Sterry's Seabirds (Steck-Vaughn, 1994). Indexes make the cursory information in these three titles useful for school reports, but the presentations lean more toward recreational reading. There are no names of birds in the glossary to help young readers with pronunciations of such words as ptarmigans and phalaropes.
