I prefer This Bible Dictionary,

This review is from: New Unger's Bible Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is one of several available Bible dictionaries. I prefer it because it is up to date, comprehensive for a one-volume reference, and has some fine color and bw illustrations. Fifteen color Bible maps with indexes are included as an appendix. It does not champion any particular school of Bible interpretation, although it is obvious that the editors hold to the fundamentals of the Christian faith and the inerrancy of the Scriptures.

One of the best...,

I frequently find myself returning to this dictionary time and again, because it has so much valuable information in it and because it is very extensive in its wide range of topics (for example, ever wondered what 'Selah' means in the Psalms? - it's in here). I would highly recomend this to anyone who is seeking to better understand terms, ideas, names, places, etc... in the Bible.

My favorite Bible Dictionary,
By moviemusicbuff (Walnut, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The New Unger's Bible Dictionary (Hardcover)
I own several other Bible dictionaries (e.g. New Bible Dictionary, Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Eerdmans Bible Dictionary) and I use this one the most. This edition is revised and updated by the editors R.K. Harrison, Howard F. Vos, and Cyril J. Barber (all renown evangelical scholars). It is much better than the older Ungers Bible Dictionary.Dr. Merrill Unger is an evangelical scholar who holds to the full inerrancy of Scripture and who adopts a conservative viewpoint regarding the authorship of books such as Isaiah and Daniel. He believes in the single authorship of Isaiah and holds to an earlier dating of the book of Daniel. His views on the prophetic / apocalyptic books such as Daniel and Revelation reflect a premillennial dispensationalist viewpoint (i.e. futurist view); that is, he believes that Israel and the church are distinct from one another and have distinct purposes, the Rapture will come before the Great Tribulation, the millennium is a literal 1,000 years, etc. Regarding the rite of baptism, Unger is careful to explain both the Baptist and non-Baptist views. Concerning the Lord's Supper, he does a brief treatment of the different views regarding the essential nature of the elements in the Lord's Supper. The entries are very clearly written and easy to understand. Interspersed throughout are helpful maps, colored illustrations, and black and white photographs. If you want a clearly written Bible dictionary written from a conservative, evangelical viewpoint, this dictionary is for you. I turn to this reference first when I'm in need of a quick, comprehensive treatment of a topic in the Bible. It's my favorite Bible dictionary. It explains everything clearly, succinctly, yet comprehensively. Highly recommended!

Unger One of the Great Bible Scholars of the 20th Century,

This review is from: New Unger's Bible Dictionary (Hardcover)
Unger's greatness is in his humility. His writings seek to glorify The Lord, not himself. I also recommend his Commentary on the Old Testament, by far the best-ever written. Unger is a christian to be honored and his writings should be treasured. This book is a must-have for the grace-oriented believer.

A concise reference,
By A Customer
This review is from: New Unger's Bible Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is an excellent reference for anyone who is interested in careful and concise Biblical explanations and definitions. The scholarship is current, and its premise that the Bible is inerrant is certainly welcome by those who desire a dependable reference for Biblical analysis. Additionally, because of the superciliousness of the reader who gave this work a one-star rating (i.e., 'A reader from MS'), his remarks, in this reviewer's opinion, should be substantially discounted. Instead, let the merits of the work be the principal criteria as regards its true worth.

Unger's Bible Dictionary (Kindle),

I have the hardcover which is excellent. I just received this on my Kindle online and am very disappointed because you cannot go to a particular word or topic. You can only go to the first letter in the word and then have to go page after page to find the particular word or topic you want. This is very unsatisfactory and defeats the purpose of a dictionary to look up a particular word or topic. The alphabet needs to expand and have the first two letters (aa, ab, ac, ad, etc.). This would cut the search time and would make the online dictionary useful.

I could never overrate this work and I recommend it to every Christian. My Unger's gets handled most every day for academic reference. At Christmas it was my gift to ladies whom I disciple; it is a present that never stops giving. This comprehensive work covers most every topic in defining detail. It is a concise Bible college education in itself. Within the binding you will access assisting photos of Holy Land locations. Illustrated art work and detailed maps provide desired visual aids. As a chronicled antiquity guide, it doesn't lack in providing current facts. Not long ago, I was teaching the neighborhood children John chapter 4 and opened my Unger's to a photo of Jacob's Well that is referred to in this chapter. Exhibiting images of study verses imparts a lesson memory card not easily discarded.

I have enjoyed Unger's Bible Dictionary over the years. However, the Kindle edition gets zero for searches. Clarification: One can search for a word and everywhere it appears in the dictionary will be shown. Sometimes hundreds. BUT - when searching for an particular article, such as 'Jonah', all that pops up is every single instance of the word in the dictionary. Most Kindle dictionaries will come up with suggestions as you begin typing the word. This one only allows you to go to the beginning of each letter group and then you must page through until the article appears. What a waste of time. Please help.

This particular Bible dictionary is by far the most complete for reference work when studying Scripture. By looking up particular people, places, and events, I have come to a far better understanding while studying. I would not hesitate to recommend this dictionary to anyone who wants the absolute best.

A Real Improvement,
This review is from: The New Unger's Bible Dictionary (Hardcover)
I used my old Unger's Bible Dictionary heavily to aid my personal Bible study and teaching preparation. This new version is a real improvement with color photographs and updated information. A good Bible dictionary like this is something no student of the scriptures should be without.
