A must for any kitchen!,
This review is from: New Vegetarian Cuisine: 250 Low-Fat Recipes for Superior Health (Paperback)
Several recipes in this book have become staples in my family. They are well thought out and easy to prepare. Every recipe I've tried was absolutely savory! We are not vegetarians, but find that we don't miss meat when we dig into this book. I've just become pregnant and have found many recipes that will accomodate my new dietary requirements. Whether your looking for whole meals or for side-dishes you'll find recipes that meet your needs and that you and your family will love.

This is definitely my most used cookbook. The recipes are simple, ingredients easy to find, and the food is truly healthy and delicious. Even my meat and potatoe friends like it. You can plan way ahead with these meals, since the ingredients will keep for a week usually, which makes preparation even more convenient.

I cook from this regularly!,

I focused anew on healthy foods a few months ago, and several recipes from this cookbook are in my "regular rotation". They are very tasty, easy to fix, and call for easy-to-find ingredients. I like the page lay-out of the book, too. I have lost over 25 pounds in 4 mos without ever going hungry or "dieting". When my doctor's nurse called to tell me about the improvement in my blood lipid panel, she added, "We rarely see so much improvement." My favorite recipes (paraphrased titles which I am copying from the back of my meal-planner) are:
sweet-and-sour tofu with broc & pprs, p. 261 curried tofu w fruit & quinoa, p. 345 hoisin & black-bean stir-fry w carrots, pprs, squash, snow-peas, p. 137 caul & raisin curry w chickpeas, p. 260

Great, delicious easy meal.,

This cookbook is filled with easy and inexpensive recipes. The recipes center around a vegetarian kitchen that relies on staples such as pasta, beans, grains, etc. Even if you don't usually have these things on hand, they are easy to find and inexpensive.
Most recipes are hearty and enjoyable for vegetarians and non-vegetarians a like. My only complaint is that of the hundreds of recipes, there are pictures of only a fraction of them.

Best cookbook I own!,

Throw away all your other cookbooks...especially us vegetarians! I have EVERY page dog-eared and book marked...the top of the book looks like it had a bad-hair day!!! These are the best recipes in the world...and SOOOO many of them! Lots of nice pictures although I would have liked more (the book would have been 100 pounds if they did that). I have tried well over 75 recipes and only a few needed minor changes for my taste. I have MANY other similar cookbooks but they dont come close to the shear number of great tastes in this book.

I got this cookbook quite a while back and don't use it as often as I ought to, but it is one of my favorites. The 5 minute pizza crust recipe alone is worth the price. This is a cookbook for normal people who don't have three hours to make dinner and lots of unusual and expensive ingredients. We're not vegetarians, but I wanted to be able to prepare appetizing vegetable dishes (that my kids will eat) and use less meat. I ordered another vegetarian cookbook at the same time and it made me really appreciate this one.

A solid cookbook but lacking in color and photographs which I believe are important in cookbooks. Over all it has good vegetatian recipes.

Big on looks and low on taste!,
This review is from: New Vegetarian Cuisine: 250 Low-Fat Recipes for Superior Health (Paperback)
The recipes in this book look delicious and are relatively easy to make. Most require a number of fresh vegetables, which is not always the economical way to go. There are mouth-watering pictures for some of the dishes, but not all. The problem is that the finished product has absolutely no taste. I have made about 6-7 of these recipes, following each one to the letter, and each one has been a disappointment, mostly because of lack of taste. I'm not an advocate for adding sugar or salt to meals for taste, but after all the effort and expense that goes in to making these dishes, one would expect that they taste a little different than eating cardboard. For instance, I recently made the apple pancakes recipe. The pancakes came out fluffy and perfect with one exception: absolutely no taste. Not even a hint of apple taste, even though I used an apple.
I am really disappointed by this book. I looked at scores of vegetarian cookbooks at Borders when I decided to go meatless and went with this one because it looked like it had a nice variety of meals that weren't too difficult for a novice cook and because it had some very nice pictures of the finished meals to accompany the recipe. If you are looking for a vegetarian cookbook, think twice before buying this one. I also don't like the fact that the pictures are not found with the recipe. They are on totally different pages so you have to keep looking them up in the index. I think the picture should be featured right next to the recipe in a cookbook, and that's the kind of cookbook I will look for next. Oh yeah, and one with taste!

My husband bought me this book for Christmas, as we are fairly new to vegetarian cooking. It is comprehensive, and I love the fact that it lists nutritional values. It also has a section pairing the recipes to make a complete meal.
Many of the recipes are simple enough for the hubby to prepare (he is a non-cook), and he has made a few for me. Yay! Highly recommended. |
