quality, but needs an information update!, April 7, 2011
This review is from: A New View of a Woman's Body: A Fully Illustrated Guide (Touchstone Books (Paperback)) (Paperback)
I had to buy this book for a class on Women's Health. it's a quality guide to the body, very thorough, although in many instances I feel it comes off as a bit too judgmental, especially in the birth control section. I understand this is an older book, and IUDs in the 1970s and 1980s were famously dangerous, but it really needs to be updated in respect to that point specifically. IUDs come with their risks of course, but they're just as safe and effective as the pill for most women. This is my biggest qualm with the book, that the information on the IUD is outdated. it still says that, for instance, a woman should have her IUD changed every three years when the Mirena nowadays is removed every 5, and the copper IUD, according to the book, should be removed every 7 years when the Paraguard is removed every 10. it's also clear that the writer is very biased against hormonal birth control and the IUD in general. while I understand everyone has their opinions, and I don't care much for hormonal birth control either, I feel it was a poor choice to allow such a biased opinion into the book.
overall, I think it's a very useful resource for the anatomy illustrations, general information and photos, but it really needs aforementioned update and fixing of the biased language used.
