Very Cool Music For The Festivities!,
By
This review is from: New Wave Halloween (Audio CD)
I must say, Rhino does up compilations very nicely. This collection of Halloween songs is a nice party alternative if you want to diversify beyond "Monster Mash" type tunes. You've got a little Rocky Horror, Ramones, B-52s and SIX SONGS with the SAME TITLE!
The strongest songs with an all-out Halloween aura are "Dead Man's Party," Siouxsie and the Banshee's "Halloween," and B-52's "Devil in My Car." If you are a Dead Kennedys or Misfits fan, their individual sounds shine here (though I wonder what they think about being marked New Wave?), a must for fans. About the only song that left me cold was Comateen's "Munster's Theme." In all fairness, it did have a bonafide electronic keyboard New-Wave flavor to it, so it matches nicely with the compilation subject. I guess I'm picky, but in my opinion, the cool surf-guitar sound is what makes The Munsters Theme so hep! This is a solid compilation of Halloween Party music; enough songs to grab peoples' attention, enough that serve up well as party background music. Good buy for the price tag.

An Absolute Treat!,
By Tyler (Arlington, Texas) - See all my reviews

This is easily the best Halloween music collection I've ever heard! It is danceable from beginning to end and paced perfectly for a party. The sound quality ranks close to my gold cd's. Even the version of The Munsters Theme which is included rocks. Buy it and hope for a volume 2.

Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Halloween is probably their best entry in that it will have the broadest appeal. A lively party of Halloween-themed music, it swings from the danceable to the dangerous, sometimes with little or no warning.
The tracks include: The Time Warp--not precisely 80's material, but certainly RHPS's cult following in that decade helped make the song a modern classic. 'Everday is Halloween' by Ministry is the first song of theirs I have heard. It reminds me more than a little of the Art of Noise. 'Devil In My Car' by the B-52s brings their funky-dance floor techno sensibility to Halloween. Dead Man's Party, a long time Oingo Boingo standard, is my favorite track on the CD. 'Pet Semetary' by the Ramones, is a relatively deep tune, considering their normal repertoire. Good, though. For those fond of the Meco concept of music, but perhaps thought it was a little tame, MX-80's energetic version of the 'Theme from Halloween' is pleasant filler. The 'Munster's Theme' is a quick dive into pure silliness, redeeming itself primarily due to its brevity. 'The Creature from the Black Lagoon' is my favorite new discovery (and my second favorite track on the CD), a sophisticated punk tune capturing the flare of 50's music and movies. 'Halloween' by the Dream Syndicate reminds me of another band called Flour, one of my favorite artist. However, I do believe Dream Syndicate is the more well known band. Good tune. Sonic Youth's 'Halloween' takes the CD out of the realm of kid friendly with the use of the 'f'word, but an appealing track nonetheless. The Dead Kennedys and the Misfits both provide tracks titled 'Halloween', and both are solid tunes. Mudhoney's cover of Sonic Youth's Halloween is different enough to justify it being on the same CD. Roky Erikson, a gothic-punk horror artist and a modernization of Screaming Lord Sutch, lends his talents to wrap up the CD. A 5 on a 5 point scale, and a 9 on a 10 point scale.

Anyone who enjoys the Halloween season, like late September through the last day of October when you finally have to take down your dozens of decorations...this one is for you. Of course it's edgy you know with the New Wave title, and for fans like me who were searching for alternative Halloween rock that caters to a mainly hard rock/alternative, punk, whatever other label fits, and new wave audience. If all that appeals or has a feel for you, then you will have a great time like me listening to these on a daily basis for a couple months.
Being in the Midwest, and the changing of the season's makes it all the more fun. Watching scary movies from the 80's and listening to this music is the most fun you can have in the fall by far! You've got "The Time Warp" (classic), "Everyday Is Halloween" (classic), "Pet Sematary" (classic)...and it goes on and on. There is a variety like I said here, you get some alternative and I love the Dream Syndicate halloween song...to punk with the Misfits and Dead Kennedys. Just a nice addition to any rock and roll Halloween party, you could put this on and really get the party going so strong...it's scary.

zombie must buy.. zombie must buy...,

If for you Halloween is a good excuse to party in the middle of the week, then maybe it's also a good excuse to buy this CD. "Thriller", however, is conspicuously absent, and you just can't have a Halloween party without some guy getting sloshed and trying to Moonwalk. Maybe it would have ruined the feel of the record, sandwiched in between The Misfits and Sonic Youth? The B-52's doing "Devil in my Car" is a nice touch, so is Ministry, and you can't beat the six versions of "Halloween" on one disc that you don't have to make yourself. There's all kinds of other stuff that *could* have fit the bill if you're calling Dead Kennedys, Sonic Youth and Misfits new wave.. whatever. The theme is basically there - but there's a long way between Sonic Youth and the Rocky Horror theme. I'm still a real sucker for cheap comps like this.

A great compilation of 80's/punk/new wave Halloween songs. This is on constant rotation for me, especially around Halloween. I wore out my first copy, so I just bought another! Definitely worth picking up.

Several really Cool Halloween Songs that you might not already know!,
This review is from: New Wave Halloween (Audio CD)
This CD has Halloween music that I have not found elsewhere. As a matter of fact, some of the songs on this CD are now my top favorites!
The best songs on this CD are: Every Day is Halloween Dead Man's Party Pet Semetary Time Warp (of course.. but you will probably find this on many halloween CDs) Some of the songs called Halloween were so bad I didn't include them in my playlist for my party. But all told, the great songs on the CD are GREAT so it is worth it if you want cool music for your party, or if you just love Halloween music!

This is a fairly good Halloween collection that could have been very good. Had they not stuck to only the "new wave" formula, this may have been better. An "Alternative Halloween" would have made more sense. Don't get me wrong, the bands here are all good, but why not "The Vampire Song" by Concrete Blonde, or "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus, or even "Thriller"? Also, just because a song is titled Halloween, doesn't mean it fits the mood musically. Nobody is gonna hear the Sonic Youth track and say "Hey, this is perfect for Halloween"! But on a positive note, it still does a decent job, and you could always give it a spin any time of the year, whenever you're in a scary alt-punk mood.

This is one of two Halloween cds I keep in my car year round. Sometimes when you're coming home after a hard day or just driving around on a beautiful day, there's nothing better than rolling down the windows and blasting this disc.
It's not as thematically relevant as Halloween Hootenany (my favorite Halloween cd!) but it's definately a great runner-up. I wouldn't say all the tunes are "New Wave". I prefer to think the title referes more to it being a new wave of Halloween music instead of the type of music on it. If you're looking for something with more to offer than the standard Ghostbusters/Thriller/Bad Moon Rising/Etc compilations, this is your ticket. |
