This review is from: New Wine of Dominican Spirituality: A Drink Called Happiness (Paperback)
I recently read this book. I read this book within one day of getting it...I just couldn't put it down. I especially liked the mystical treatments of the Incarnation and Contemplation wherein Fr. Murray speaks of God not as the Object of our comtemplation, but as the Subject....God contemplating the world through us. To the Dominican the "ecstacy of (contemplative) prayer is reversed... the contemplative comes out from God and looks towards things...to contemplate is to gaze at things with God. The book is "foundational" in the sense that it presents basic tenants of Dominican spirituality and draws real-life parallels to our Christic of life. In discussing one aspect of Dominican spirituality (rigorous study), he writes, "Although, for the discipline of theology, we need to read many books....our reading and study not only leads us to new knowledge and information....but also to a new depth of wonder and praise, a new song of thanksgiving." The author invites us to come and drink the new wine of Dominican spirituality with him. This is a book where you want to commit to memory much of what he says.

The Best Book on Dominicans in a Long Time,
This review is from: New Wine of Dominican Spirituality: A Drink Called Happiness (Paperback)
This book should be on the shelf of every Dominican, and every person that is interested in the Dominican Order. Fr. Murray brings recaptures the joy, enthusiasm and zeal of the first days of the Order in such a way that we can learn from our Dominican Brothers and Sisters for today.
A beautiful, rich, poetic, substantial book!

Fr Murray does a wonderful job of describing the happiness and joy that has become a hallmark of Dominican Spirituality. This book is a great get for anyone looking into authentic Catholic spiritual approaches. Personally, I am looking into the Dominican Laity so this book was very helpful in that process. The foreword by Timothy Radcliffe, OP is extremely nice as well. I recommend it highly.

This book is an insightful and joyous glimpse into the lives and missions of those who are called to the Dominican Order, either as religious or lay associates. It dispels many common myths people have, for instance, that Dominican Friars (and religious in general) are a glum bunch, always bemoaning the state of the world, and never enjoying life. It also shows the consistancy between the founding of the Order, and the charisms of St. Dominic that he wished to share and for his Order to exhibit, from that time until the current day. It is a hopeful book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Certainly for anyone discerning a possible vocation, this is a must-read.
