This has got to be Charlotte's finest album to date. It is musically and lyrically out of this world. Absolutely five stars! Get this album and enjoy! Charlotte proves her virtuosity and musicianship on this record. We will only see greater things from her in the years to come.

I'd first encountered Charlotte Hatherley back when she played guitar in Ash circa 2001 and then I got her first solo album, Grey Will Fade, but lost track of her for a while after that. I accidentally ran across the song White on an internet streaming service, checked out the rest of the tracks, and was hooked on this album. This is a great, slightly odd (but in a very good way) little indie rock album. She writes interesting, catchy indie rock songs marked by interesting melodies, spot on (but not too showy) guitar work, and nice vocals. Recommended for fans of quirky indie rock. Definitely worth a listen. Highlights include White and Alexander.

Always been a fan of Charlotte. I originally bought the digital edition when it came out, mainly bought the CD as I wanted the artwork and to sit next to her earlier two albums. This album impressed me from the first single "White", her last album was import only and fell off the radar in North America. If you can see her live, the experience is even better :-)

It was by sheer happenstance that I discovered Charlotte Hatherley's "New Worlds" album. Strangely enough I found the review of the track "Alexander" when looking for another on Pitchfork.com. I liked how the picture on the cover looked, so I thought it wouldnt hurt to listen to the song. "Alexander" blew my mind away! Pitchfork only gave it a 6 or 7, but that song and this album are hands down a 10. I cannot believe how lucky I was to run across her by random chance.
Of all the albums of 2009, this is definately my personal favorite. There is something mystical about Charlotte's sound. Her voice echoes, her guitar buzzes, and it all works together in harmony to create some of the best music I have heard in a long time. Everytime I start this album I HAVE to listen to it all the way through! Not one track I hate. It starts off with a bang thanks to the songs "White" and "Alexander"(favorite track on the album). The album stays steady throughout, never losing its momentum. Hatherley then shows a softer side with "Cinnabar" which has lyrics that create beautifully vivid images. As it ends strongly with "Wrong Notes", a perfect ending to a perfect cd. I wait until the last note of that song then immediately start back at "White". I'm in love with Charlotte Hatherley! It's a shame that no US store carries her other works, whether it be digital or physical cd. But from the amazing suprise that was "New Worlds" I may just import her last albums which I think amazon.com has for like $35 each!! I have the digital tracks of this, and I still want to buy the cd just to have it!

I've been a fan of Charlotte since she released the 'Bastardo' single, after leaving the band Ash. I was surprised to hear how strong the songs were and her sweet voice. I enjoyed her debut album "Grey Will Fade". Her second album "Grey Will Fade" was stunning. It was more experimental than her debut. Now comes her third album "New Worlds" and it builds on the experimentation and songwriting of "Deep Blue". It's probably her best work.
The thing I love about Charlotte is her voice and her guitar playing. She is not content with basic song structure either. Some of her songs are experimental, but they always have a pop sensibility that put them on the pleasing side of avant garde. "White" is a good opener. The harmonies are nice. For me "Alexander" is the highlight of the album. The guitar playing is wonderful. The chorus is infectious. I like the male voice in the background on the chorus. It gives it a backbone. This is pop rock at its best. "Straight Lines" is another rocker with an interesting time signature. "New Worlds" is a super frantic pop song. The guitar playing is choppy. Very enjoyable. "Firebird" is unusual but excellent. Like Marlene Dietrich. "Full Circle" is superb also. Great angular pop music. "Little Sahara", "Colours", "Cinnabar" and "Wrong Notes" are good songs as well. Overall a brilliant angular pop album. If you like PJ Harvey or Bat For Lashes, you should give her a listen. |
