TOP 1000 REVIEWERon March 23, 2011
Format: DVD
This DVD of the New Year Eve Concert of the Berlin Philharmonic under guest conductor Gustavo Dudamel is a first rate entertainment.
The repertoire showcases Dudamel's musicality and the pieces suit his temperament to a "T".
The beautiful mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca sings here French arias by Saint-Saens, Berlioz and Bizet, and other 'Latinate' songs like Granada. These songs by Chapi and Lara do not necessarily suit her rather icy musical temperament, but in this case, with the partnership of the BPO under Dudamel, it works well.
There is a balance that is well struck between the conductor, the orchestra and the singer. The BPO plays opulently, with star soloists and concert master sharing, if not stealing, a good many parts of the show. The camera is also more than ready to catch those moments, though the wonderful concert master could still be better showcased in such a starry setup.
In a diamond set up as such, it is well-nigh impossible for any one performer to 'steal the show'. And such does not happen. Rather, we are in for a wonderful collaboration between the orchestra, conductor and soloist. Everything put together in utmost coherence, and that tells alot about the indiviuals' musical calibre. If there is any complaint, it is that there was no vocal piece from Falla.
Other than that minor quibble, this is thoroughly enjoyable.

For the benefit of those who are not so familar with these two incredible artists, both of them are currently considered to be the BEST in their business. Elina stays in Europe, while Gustavo Dudamel is now leading the L.A. Philharmonic. Your purchasing of this DVD should be one of your best bet.

I had this DVD in late January. DGG did not released it to the US but to other countries first.

Elina Garanca is considered to be the BEST mezzo-soparno at the moment, and MHO is she deserved the title, and the "Dude" simply makes magic.

I have about seven other versions of Saint-saen's Samson et Delila because I love that music. Comparing with other singers, no one can sing nearly as good as Elina. Meanwhile, Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most sensitive conductor ever. Super precise, but would never rob nor compete with the singer's voice. Whenever Elina sings, Dudamel would immediately lower the sound level of the orchestra so that she doesn't have to fight with the orchestra. Elina's voice and pitch and timing and everything else is superbly perfect.

Her Bizet's Carmen shows how involved and how deeply her understanding of the music is. The Carmen makes me smile, and on top, she was also teasing Dudemal, which the music is supposed to be. However, when she sings Saint-Saen's Samson et Delila, the mood is completely different. She bring tears to my eyes. It is very, very touching and because of this great performance, I went through a lot of effort just to get the DVD before it was release here in the U.S., and now I am a happy camper and have also almost worn out the DVD.

You can now just double click on Amazon.com and you can get this incredible DVD in two days. Not very fair #to me !!# but it is worth it :-))

Enjoy !

Gustavo Dudamel is masterful with the BPO in this New Year's Concert and, as usual, conducts without a score for all 90 minutes. Thus he and the orchestra are literally riveted to each other. Elina Garanca is in great voice singing excerpts from Samson and Dalila and Carmen. It is obvious that she and Gustavo are quite comfortable working with each other, and the result is a most enjoyable concert. I recommend this without reservation!

She sings beautifully and I wish she had sung more in this concert. Her voice is from God and pure as gold.

Dudamel conducts the Berlin Philharmonic for a 2010 New Year's Eve Concert with Elina Garanca (mezzo soprano) and an opera pal of Anna Netrebko. If they are not from Venezuela, they must be from behind the iron curtain (in this case Latvia). The orchestra plays Berlioz, Saint-Saens, Bizet and for Gustavo: De Falla.

I am not a fan of opera but bought this because I am a Gustavo Dudamel fanatic. The musical selections were incredible and the voice mesmerizing. I might just be an opera fan now! Hey DG- MORE GUSTAVO DVDS! Not all of us can make it to the concerts. DG does such an incredible job with the filming as to bring this event truly into your home and into your life. I am incredibly grateful for this. I want more! Bravo!

I liked the way they interjected the orchestra peaces between the solos. I am not sure but I think it was, because Elina was "expecting".
As usual Elina's singing was exelent and the conductor was good too.
