This DVD of the New Year Eve Concert of the Berlin Philharmonic under guest conductor Gustavo Dudamel is a first rate entertainment.
The repertoire showcases Dudamel's musicality and the pieces suit his temperament to a "T".
The beautiful mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca sings here French arias by Saint-Saens, Berlioz and Bizet, and other 'Latinate' songs like Granada. These songs by Chapi and Lara do not necessarily suit her rather icy musical temperament, but in this case, with the partnership of the BPO under Dudamel, it works well.
There is a balance that is well struck between the conductor, the orchestra and the singer. The BPO plays opulently, with star soloists and concert master sharing, if not stealing, a good many parts of the show. The camera is also more than ready to catch those moments, though the wonderful concert master could still be better showcased in such a starry setup.
In a diamond set up as such, it is well-nigh impossible for any one performer to 'steal the show'. And such does not happen. Rather, we are in for a wonderful collaboration between the orchestra, conductor and soloist. Everything put together in utmost coherence, and that tells alot about the indiviuals' musical calibre. If there is any complaint, it is that there was no vocal piece from Falla.
Other than that minor quibble, this is thoroughly enjoyable.
