About the Author
Marla Hamburg Kennedy is a leading dealer and adviser for twentieth- and twenty-first-century art. Hamburg Kennedy was previously the director of the Howard Greenberg Gallery and managing partner of Kennedy Boesky Photographs until starting Hamburg Kennedy Photographs in 2004. She was also the editor of the book Looking at Los Angeles.

There are plenty of photo books of New York by individual photographers but few worthwhile ones that have a first-class selection of creative work from many photographers. This title is one of the few with 350 images of the city from a hundred established and new names.
What appealed to me about the book was the selection of images, virtually all of them considered and thoughtful interpretations of the city rather than the work I see in a lot of contemporary books with intensely personal photo statements using odd angles, out of focus, badly framed and poor subject matter. In these pages there are some real eye catchers that pull you into the frame and hold you there like the three street scenes from Peter Funch, the two montages by Isido Blasco or Jose Ballester's color saturated Times Square.
The format works well, too. Rather than mix everything up these pages have themes of photos: five spreads, taken from above, of New Yorkers relaxing; the abstract nature of skyscrapers; graffiti; houses and shops in the boroughs and the last four photos of night landscapes by Kevin Cooley. The book's production is what you would expect from Rizzoli, good paper and printing (using a 175 screen) and a straightforward elegant layout. Though I've given it five stars it should really four and a half because of the annoyance of having all the captions on seven pages at the back of the book. A lot of unnecessary page turning even though nearly every spread has space for the relevant caption.
I mentioned that this title was a worthwhile collection of New York photos and it joins these three to reflect a view of the city over several decades. New York: Portrait Of A City, The New York School: Photographs, 1936-1963, New York in Color.
