soulful art pepper, February 18, 2002

This review is from: New York Album (Audio CD)
art pepper's distinctive styling, that's compelling and addicting to listen to, is evident on this recording. it's a great recording to hear him at his best. but i know it's not his best work because the band on this recording does not seem to be able to keep up with him, and they don't seem to quite connect with him. only the pianist hank jones seems to approach what art can do. the drums and bass do not seem up to the task.
but it's still a great recording because it conveys a sense of art pepper's potential. it makes me wonder if he really ever had the right band, or the right band at the right time, in his career. so now i have to sit and listen to my other art pepper recordings.
his true potential, distinctive styling and very soulful, is evident here.
