5.0 out of 5 stars Harry at his best!
For all of you Harry Connick Jr. fans, this is a deal you just can't pass up! The selections of songs in this concert are some of Connick's best and it shows his personality in full "swing"! Another great thing about this video is that he involves the audience in such a way that it doesn't leave you feeling left out, like other recoreded performances. Feeling...

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't let this bar you from enjoying it, but......
I got this DVD as a present from a friend, who was very impressed by it.

Regrettably I cannot share his enthousiasm for this kind of 'big mouth, big show, no content' type of entertainment. Mind you, I don't have a problem with 'pure entertainment' as such, but this one is simply too empty for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harry at his best!, October 26, 2000
This review is from: New York Big Band Concert [VHS] (VHS Tape)
For all of you Harry Connick Jr. fans, this is a deal you just can't pass up! The selections of songs in this concert are some of Connick's best and it shows his personality in full "swing"! Another great thing about this video is that he involves the audience in such a way that it doesn't leave you feeling left out, like other recoreded performances. Feeling depressed? Curl up with some popcorn and Harry Connick Jr. and kiss your troubles away! You'll never get tired of watching it! I highly suggest buying this video for yourself and your friends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Get "Swingin Out Live" First!, January 8, 2001
By A Customer
Although I rate this concert highly, I have to recommend "Swingin Out Live" more: Harry is younger and not quite as Hollywood, he plays the piano more (and, might I add, brilliantly) and the venue is intimate. That being said. I liked the New York Concert more than I thought I would. With original songs, outstanding performances from his bandmates, and lots of New Orleans style fun-it's hard not to swing along! To the man who called it too "brassy"...darlin' it's southern-style big band. If you want "cool" stick with Miles!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Live Harry Connick Jr, February 5, 2006
I've been a big fan of Harry Connick Jr for quite some time and even bought the cd's during his phase of going "funk" (Star Turtle). This disc is my favorite of every DVD and CD that I have of him. I've even been to one of his concerts and still say this disc is better.

The band is an arrangement of the best musicians around and there are plenty of solos where you can see them display their talent.

If your a Harry Connick Jr fan, make sure you dont pass this one up.

Awesome band behind a great entertainer. One of his best recordings. I saw this on public television years ago, and am happy it is out on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Multi-Talented Connick On Disply In this Feel-Good Concert, February 20, 2009

This concert turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. If you like an excellent singer and performer and like the brassy sound, you'll love this.

I can't say I'm a big fan of big band music.....but, even for me, this was an enjoyable hour of entertainment. The only disappointment was that the DVD wasn't much better quality than the VHS tape.

Connick is a modern-day Frank Sinatra, a guy with a great voice, a cock-sure attitude (but not arrogant), knows how to ad-lib between songs and has a way of making ordinary songs sound extraordinary. He may not be exactly in Sinatra's class as a singer but he's a more diverse entertainer (see below). My only complaint was that sometimes he clowns around too much, ruining part of a song here and there by getting silly.

When he sticks to his music he's amazing, whether he's singing, playing the piano, the drums or anything else. He's multi-talented as you will see watching this hour-long concert. The band isn't bad, either, and shows its stuff in the finale, "All Of me." There is excellent chemistry among all.

It's just a feel-good, fun concert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Fun, August 29, 2002
By
This great DVD captures the essence of Harry Connick, Jr. very well. Although his piano-playing and New Orleans influence are noticeably sparse, this disc is about him swinging loud and hard. His big band, as usual, is tight and swings extremely well. The selection of songs is great, ranging from more intimate standards like "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" to upbeat originals like "Recipe for Love" and "We Are In Love".

The disc is wonderfully intimate both visually and aurally. The sound is clear and strong, and the camera work doesn't get in the way of the performance. Often mischaracterized as a Sinatra clone, on this disc Connick manages to show his depth, musical ability, and pure charm. Make sure to check out his other, softer side with his older solo albums too.
