Biography

1981 - August
On August 19th, Neil and Chris meet by chance in an electronics shop on the Kings Road. Realizing they have a common interest in dance music, they begin to write together. Initially they call themselves West End; later they come up with the name Pet Shop Boys, a name derived from some friends who work in a pet shop in Ealing. "We thought it sounded like an English rap group".

4.0 out of 5 stars "If you don't get the mix, get the mix, get the mix...", July 21, 2000
This review is from: New York City Boy CD 1 (Audio CD)
It never ceases to amaze me how many different composers and DJ's are asked to visit and help out on their mixes...that is when they finally put them out and decide to grace the fans with their "holier than thou" presence which true fans love and eat up instantly. All of these mixes on this part 1 and part 2 single, are unlike the other, and that IS rare to find. Mixes are usually made up of the same music, same beat, same silly words repeated over and over again. When first seeing how many mixes of this song there are, one might feel a bit overwhelmed by the same song over and over again. Au contraire, 'You'll never have a bored day" with this single, it's almost like another album. Each song seems to convey different energetic ways of trying to express this one song which they've picked to focus on, "New York City Boy", from their latest album Nightlife. One mix might give a sense of urgency and immediacy. The next might seem panicked and nervous(with a hint of romantic classical), followed by what seems to be an experiment with just one phrase of the song, and ending with pure haunting intensity which never fails to be mixed with a sense of apprehension; sort of like finishing a fierce story with an incredible sensual bang. Sound a little too extreme? Pet Shop Boys could never be described as restrained. Yet these mixes have many different levels of subtleties. Making one feel anxious and leaving you in a state of almost uncomfortable anticipation leaves the fans desiring, no, demanding more each time. For people who don't like the feeling of being hot and bothered, Pet Shop Boys will continue to offend you, ignoring all criticisms and defensive reviews. The ones who go along for the ride and brave the stormy waters, are the true fans who see right through the numerous misinterpretations...and we'll take as much as we can get.
