Editorial Reviews

Review

"Naomi Fertitta's "New York: The Big City and Its Little Neighborhoods" (Universe, $25), provides surprising, delightful and practical insights into the people, sights, food and shopping found in the city's ethnic communities — a must read for New Yorkers and visitors alike." ~The New York Times

"The title says it all. Fertitta and Aresu take the intimidation factor out of New York by zeroing in on small neighborhoods and their charms. There are few better examples of the "melting pot" cliche of the great city than the book's overview of nearly two dozen ethnic enclaves,…I can tell that this book will get quite a work out from me over the next few months." ~CTNews.com

"[The] colorful juxtaposition of faces, foods, and architecture is a bracing reminder of the city’s diversity." ~New York Times Book Review

This review is from: New York: The Big City and Its Little Neighborhoods (Paperback)
I am currently planning a trip for my family to NYC and thought this book sounded right up my alley. I lived in NYC for a couple of years over 20 years ago and wanted to see some of NYC's local flavor. This book's description lead me to believe that I was going to get a "guide" to NYC's neighborhoods. I was disappointed after I received the book. I knew it was a short book (157 pages) but I expected more than 40 of those pages to be devoted to Manhattan! The restaurant lists are exactly that...Just a name and address, no phone number and certainly no information about price, menu, hours or any usable info. If my 2nd grader needed to write a report about NYC's neighborhoods, I would still need an alternate source! What a great idea for a book! But, if you need real information save your money.
