Book Description

March 1, 2007
Photographer Bruno Moyen took all of these pictures of the greatest city in the world in order to woo a lover to come live with him. This is New York today, as a charming blend of tourist standards—the Statue of Liberty, Coney Island, Grand Central Station, the Flatiron Building, F.A.O. Schwartz, and Central Park—as well as local favorites like Balthazar, Spring Street, the Puck Building, and the Southern-style bar Live Bait. New York City: A State of Mind is a perfect love letter and souvenir to New York’s bodegas, flower stands, tchotchke tables, building-size billboards, and dumpling houses as memorialized by an adopted son.

This book was on sale for a very cheap price so I figured I couldn't lose by ordering the book. I figured there was no way I couldn't get my moneys worth consider it was so cheap when it was on sale - but I was wrong.

I personally found the book lacking and the pictures not compelling despite the interesting technique used to create the images. First thing to note would be the dimensions of the book - In case you don't check, you should note that it isn't a large book it is in fact rather small and somewhat interestingly that exemplifies my complaint about the book. I feel a lot of images were very 'small' and very limited in scope. I was expecting more I guess consider the subject of New York, but I found a mix of general urban pictures with some flashes of New York Landscapes. The style seemed to take place over the subject of being New York.

It's a shame the ability to look inside the book isn't offered for this book, it really does seem like the book is hit or miss and I think for a lot of people it would be a miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Photography--not a Travel Book, July 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: New York City: A State of Mind (Hardcover)
Two things are distinctive about this book: It is an on-the-ground look at neighborhoods, a school bus, stores and apartment buildings, in addition to a few shots of icons like the Statue of Liberty.

It is also a bold experiment in style. Shot with indoor film and then manipulated to boost the color, the pictures offer an intense, glowing, hyperreal yet unreal look. This creates an incredible freshness to familiar subjects. This is a wonderful book, but not for people who just want a travel brochure.

This is a good book for those who want a souvenier of their time in New York. It's a collection of New York photographs that make you feel like you're back in the city. Good for the coffee table or a guest room.
