a classic that does not get its due, May 20, 2009
This review is from: New York City (You're a Woman) (Audio CD)
Al Kopper uses two bands on New York City, You're A Women: his own session band, and Hookfoot, who was Elton John's backup for his first album, Madmen Across the water, and those early masterpieces.
Throughout, Al cooks a stew of gospal, soul, blues and R&B: the kind of music he not only understands, but emminates in his DNA. The title track, Come Down in Time-yes, the Elton song--all the tracks radiate a the soul and hearbeat of a music Kopper seems to understand and feel as naturally as he breathes and eats. Both bands are fantastic: great R&B players with superior musicianship, and not a wiff of slickness.
Koopers singing here is excellent, understated at times, and this works extramely well. He seems to realize that when you hold back is sometimes as important as when you let it rip. The bands here also have this kind of dynamic control, and the synergy is absolutely perfect.
Albums, and artists like this are all two rare. If this were a just world, this album would rank up there with Cheap Thrills and Layla. It sure deserves to.

A class act! As usual., June 5, 2003
This review is from: New York City (You're a Woman) (Audio CD)
This was the follow-up to the Easy Does It double album and the first thing you notice is that the production has been stripped down compare to the 'BIG' sounds of the first 3 solo albums. This works here largely because Al knows how to get the best out of who he works with. What prevents this being a 5-star review (& this is only my opinion) is the inclusion of Ballad Of The Hard Rock Kid & Back On My Feet. Whilst neither are bad songs they are not great especially Hard Rock Kid. Listen to Rare & Well Done and you'll see that there are better songs that could have been included. Favourite songs: Title track/500 Miles/Going Quietly Mad/Medley:Ooh Wee Baby/Come Down In Time/Nightmare#5/The Warning. Buy this album you won't be disappointed.
