4.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, July 1, 2001
This review is from: The New York Diaries: Too-True Tales of Urban Trauma (Paperback)
I first became aware of Daniel Drennan through his online wrapups of "Beverly Hills 90210". His weekly commentary/recap became even more entertaining than watching the show. As the show began to tip the scales towards the "guilty" side of "guilty pleasure," even Danny gave up on it! And, boy did I miss his writing.

This book has all of the attitude, all of the style, all of the fascinating observations and none of the spoiled Beverly Hills kids. If you are from New York, or you have any interest in New York, or even if you think that people must be crazy to go anywhere near New York, you will find this book a fun and interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neurotic ranting? -- maybe. Insightful, laugh-out-loud, December 14, 1998
By A Customer

. . .funny, and all TOO TRUE-- definitely! This Drennan character is sick. Sick, I tell ya! Let's hope, for our sake, that he never gets well. Drennan's ability to articulate in words what other New Yorkers, at one time or another, have only been able to spasmodically mime to their analyst and/or passing-by police officer is kick-me- in-the-ass amazing! So much so that I began to read it slower in order to prolong the enjoyment ( this coming from a guy who eats a Big Mac in two, maybe three bites). If we're lucky, he's working on the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leaves you wanting more!, October 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Diaries: Too-True Tales of Urban Trauma (Paperback)
I've been living in the Jersey 'burbs and schlepping in and out of the Apple for more than two decades. Drennan's right on mark! This is a very funny book, which will ring bells all over the place for anyone who's ever been a part of the "New York experience." Those of you who haven't, but would like a pithy glimpse, check this one out. My only "complaint" is that the thing's too short! But, as they say, it's always best to leave 'em wanting more. That's assuredly the case here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant writing style, October 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Diaries: Too-True Tales of Urban Trauma (Paperback)
Daniel Drennan's unique writing style pulls his readers into his New York City life, entertaining us from the first page to the last. With every story he related, I found myself nodding my head in empathy; he captured the nuances and emotions of post-college life so clearly. This book was a wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drennan hits home with wry observations on urban dwellers., September 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Diaries: Too-True Tales of Urban Trauma (Paperback)
Drennan's hilarious(if skewed)view of the naked city's million stories rings true -- an "it could only happen here...and to me" recounting of the daily events that shape our lives. From the "dog people" to brunch, his eye for the absurd is sharp, and he brings the reader into his quirky mind. The stream of conciousness style somehow follows a path we understand, and it all makes sense. It's wickedly funny and I can't wait for the next installment! One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars A laff-riot with heart, truth, & right bit of bitterness., September 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Diaries: Too-True Tales of Urban Trauma (Paperback)
I guess I've lived in NYC (or maybe just lived!) long enough to know how all too true Danny's stories are. But more to the point, his telling of said stories is both priceless and timeless, in ways that have compelled me to laugh out loud publicly--which is not something I do haphazardly.

I've been a fan of Danny Drennan's for quite a while, and his book does not disappoint. He is a wicked writer with a sharp eye for the ironies that exist in the details of everyday life. New Yorkers, fans of New York, and other urban dwellers will find much to make them laugh in this cutting look at city life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Our clever boy Danny struts his stuff, September 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The New York Diaries: Too-True Tales of Urban Trauma (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of Danny Drennan's bitingly hilarious 90210 summaries (www.inquisitor.com), and so I've been excited for a while about the prospect of this book. Danny's observations are always precise, slightly off beat, and painfully true. His stream of consciousness writing makes you feel as if you are on the receiving end of a coffee date from heaven. This is a great book for anyone who has lived in a city, or contemplated it, and wants to experience first hand the hilarious torture that is Manhattan.
